Layout help

Hello.

I am doing a LJ layout but I'm having problems putting it on. My account type is plus account, apparently. I am doing the layout for a free account (I'm not sure if these are same thing).

Now, as far as I've understood I should put the overrides into the "Custom Style Sheet" box in "Customize journal". I have tried putting on a simple background image or colour, for example just putting a red background colour (using the global head, style, body etc tags - I tried pasting the code here with the LJ Cut Code, but it doesn't show). The code should be correct, since I pasted it from a tutorial.

But my journal remains unaffected. Is there something else I need to do, except writing the overrides in the Custom Style Sheet box? Or should I write them somewhere else? I have tried reading through different tutorials but none of them have been able to help me with this since they mostly just explain different overrides.

Also, I would like to know if it's possible for a free user to make a layout with a header image, two sidebar images and a background image (simple gradient). For reference, it looks like this (blue blocks are images): http://img10.imageshack.us/my.php?image=layoutjzf.jpg
The text would come into the gradient part.

Now, I hope I put this in the right place, please correct me if I didn't.

Thank you.
