Well... Looking at the comments, it looks like the first one is more of a narrative explaining what's canon and what's not in the post-Infinite Crisis verse. The second looks like it's mostly illustrations and deals briefly only with JLA origins. So, having read neither of them, I'd guess that the first one might be more useful to you. However, there could easily be people better informed about other books, so their advice should trump mine. :P
