The doctors had warned her of the potential of phantom pain and given her a list of ways to combat it, but Melusine had promptly shoved the paper in her desk and forgot about it. She was a witch, after all; she knew what was real and what wasn't. She never accidentally went to stand on the leg that was no longer there. She hadn't been jerked awake by sizzling pain in the night.
But then that girl had come to the store, and now what remained of her right leg buzzed like an angry beehive. The customer looked normal enough, but there was something off about her. Melusine's mother had said some people moved to music only they could hear, but it was more than that-like two people were occupying the space meant only for one.
Tremors washed over Melusine's amputation point as she heaved herself out of bed. Giving up any hope of sleep, the witch rubbed her severed leg briskly as she made her way from her attached apartment to the store, flinching at the static that sparked from her fingertips. By the time she turned on the light in the back room, her right leg was throbbing. It had felt like that girl's shadow was on the inside, eclipsing her spirit, and that type of magic couldn't be met by the ingredients she kept on the shelves out front.
