homeschooling

I've been kinda all over the place with Luke's homeschooling, and this post is mostly for me, to put some thoughts in order and get more of a schedule going.

In math right now, we're working on geometry. We've finished the grade level stuff on triangles and are starting on circles.

In social studies, we're working on geography. I wanted to start with Africa, because he's able to identify several European countries but no African countries at all.

In science, we just started studying computer science using this free text, Java Notes. We are also studying the major constellations, and Luke is doing an exercise where he takes a picture of a constellation and enlarges it on another sheet of paper, using a protractor and a ruler.

We are beginning to study German, but I don't have a text yet. I'll buy a used beginning German text this weekend when I get paid and Luke's sister-in-law Kayla has had a couple of years of German and will Skype with him.

We are reading My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, and he's loving it. When I say "we," I mean that I am doing most of the reading. But he's loving it, and that's what I want -- to love reading, love stories, have an appreciation of storytelling and get a feel for how stories flow.

We do maybe a couple of hours of work about four days a week. He does best when he works in spurts of 15-20 minutes -- except for the storytelling. He always asks for one more chapter.

I think what I'm going to do is make a list and tell him he can pick what he wants to work on every day, but that a minimum number of lessons have to be done each week from each study area. Two 15-20 minute lessons a week, minimum? With a minimum of six lessons a day? That's a solid two hours on one-on-one work.

homeschool, luke
