[FAQ 227 & 228] Friends view, ?style=mine, and Merge

Jul 22, 2005 11:41

In http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=484591 a user asked whether tags in an S1 journal could be seen by an S2 user with ?style=mine. As far as I knew, that was true (similar to Friends pages), but deadmantalks helped me test that.

So I'd like to add a section to 228 and merge it with 227.

FAQ Question #228
"Why can't I see tags in my journal? How do I control who can see my tags?"

Tags in S1
Your journal will only display tags if you are using the S2 style system.

If you are using the S1 style system, you can define tags for your entries, but you won't be able to see them or sort your journal using them. There are no plans to support tags in S1 in the future.

However, people using the S2 style system have two methods to see your tags. They can see tags on your entries with their Friends page or use ?style=mine to view the rest of your journal in their style.

Tag Security Settings

People will only be able to see a tag if they are able to see any entry with that tag in your journal.

Your tags are visible on the Edit Tags page based on the security of the entries they are used on. If you have a tag you have only used on private entries, you will be the only one who can see that tag. If you have a tag used only on Friends-Only entries, only your friends will be able to see that tag. If you have a tag used on public entries, everyone can see the tag.

If you have used a tag on entries with a mixture of security settings, the tag will adopt the least restrictive setting. For instance, if you have a tag used on three private and three Friends-Only entries, the tag will be visible to your friends. If you have used a tag on three private entries and one public entry, the tag will be visible to anyone. Tags will also respect custom friend groups; if a tag has only been used on entries visible to a custom friend group, it will only be visible to members of that custom friend group.

You cannot specifically set the security level for a tag. It inherits the security level of the entries it is used on.

When someone else views a tag-filtered page such as http://www.livejournal.com/users/exampleusername/tag/tagname, they will still only see the entries they are allowed to see, no matter what the tag security level is.
