A patch release has just been put out. It fixes a few of the major problems with expanding threads and other AJAX-y style problems with the new commenting form. By "hatefest" you mean a predictable reaction to poor customer service.

Customers will be hostile when a site introduces a bug filled change with no advance notice or attempt to seek user feedback beforehand. Worse, over the holidays when fixes are slow to come and people have more time to use a service and be annoyed.
