Usericon Maker

Dec 06, 2006 17:59

For some time now, I've been playing with variations on the standard Livejournal user icon.¹ If you look at my reference pages, you can see hundreds of such icons made by myself and others, in a variety of themes. Now, I'm putting together an LJ Usericon Creator so that anyone can make their own customized usericon. (I generally use

This is going to sound like an uber-n00b question, but is there any way to change it for just your username only?
Automatically, in the style? Not that I know of. All users, yourself and others, get the same default image (http://stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif), which
ephi's instructions replace globally with another image - LiveJournal doesn't distinguish between users when it comes to the userinfo icon.
This is one reason why I don't do the global change at all - I manually create code for individual usertags in my posts and responses (like
ephi above and
allah_sulu in the original post) and just leave the system-generated user tags be. You can use my reference pages to generate the custom HTML to copy and paste into your posts.
(I'm guessing it's going to be more CSS hacking, right?)
If you find a way and prove me wrong, please, let me know!

Yeah, but I don't want to have to copy and paste code into each individual post, nor is that really the place that I wanted it changed at.

What would be awesome is if LJ had an option that lets you put in a custom userinfo.gif for just your name that would show up anywhere you use it on the site. there would be 2 different settings "myinfo.gif" and the general "userinfo.gif"

And I'd love to prove you wrong, but I don't know CSS. It's on my list of things to learn.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! You answered my question, and unfortunately it wasn't the answer I wanted, but I know there's nothing you can do about that.

Thanks for the awesome usericon generator. I know doing pixel images is a bitch and a half (I'm trying to work on some 80x30 stuff for work and it's kicking my butt), so I've got some mad respect for you.

Yeah, but I don't want to have to copy and paste code into each individual post,
I compose my entries in a program I've created, which has options for custom user tags and other code I like - but I doubt you'd want to switch to it from Semagic, since I haven't worked out (yet) how to get my tool to automatically post to LJ. Currently, after I've composed my entire post with the code I want, I still have to do a cut/paste to get it into LJ.
What would be awesome is if LJ had an option that lets you put in a custom userinfo.gif for just your name that would show up anywhere you use it on the site.
...Or if they just had a different icon for you than they used for everyone else. Then you could customize it the same way you can already customize the generic one.
And I'd love to prove you wrong, but I don't know CSS. It's on my list of things to learn.
I understand. I've still got a long list of things I need to learn (one of them, eventually, is to work out the direct connection to LJ, but I haven't really put much time/effort into that yet).
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! You answered my question, and unfortunately it wasn't the answer I wanted, but I know there's nothing you can do about that.
If you have other questions in the future, you can ask me. I can't guarantee the quality of the answers, though.

Fortunately (sort of), I've already spent a few years now making all different custom userinfo graphics; so I'm mostly chopping up the ones I have for the usericon generator. Once that's done, I'll add more original bits.

"switch to it from Semagic"
Uh, I don't use Semagic. I'm on a Mac. I'm usually just using the posting page, although sometimes I'll use a widget or Phoenix to post. And since it's been ages since I've used my GNU/Linux box to post, I don't remember what I used there. (Oh... you saw my info page about the "I use semagic" thing. Yeah, that's from years ago when I ran Winblows. I just haven't gotten rid of it yet.)

"...Or if they just had a different icon for you than they used for everyone else. Then you could customize it the same way you can already customize the generic one."
Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. I guess I just phrased it wrong.

"If you have other questions in the future, you can ask me. I can't guarantee the quality of the answers, though."
Well, thanks! That's what I call service! Good for you to actually CARE!

"pixel images"
No, just the ability to DESIGN stuff that's recognizable that small is just completely blow my mind. I wish I knew how to do it.

So, yeah, madd props to you for your abilities and the fact that you actually care about people and their input on your project.

Then you wouldn't be able to use my program anyway. But there's still the reference page if you ever desperately need to give someone an alternate icon.

Now if only I were also getting PAID, this would all be perfect!

I'm more used to small pictures with limited resources than I am to photoshopping full-sized pictures. I got my start doing graphics on the TI-99/4A computer, and then the Apple // series, and then simple 16-color 32x32 icons under Windows 3.x, etc. I just refer to it as "minimalism" so that it sounds more impressive…

I'm primarily doing all of this work because this is stuff I want to do - and if other people want to do it and use my tools too, so much the better.
