For some time now, I've been playing with variations on the standard Livejournal user icon.¹ If you look at my reference pages, you can see hundreds of such icons made by myself and others, in a variety of themes. Now, I'm putting together an LJ Usericon Creator so that anyone can make their own customized usericon. (I generally use

I only use it within the body of a post, with different icons for different people, but it is possible to change the default usericon for certain LJ styles. Take a look at http://mrs-spock.livejournal.com/ to see how she's replaced every instance of the normal usericon with Mr. Spock.

I'm going to try using that tutorial but this part:
/* fallback code for older browsers */
has me a tad confused. What codes? I'm ok with html, I just need to read stuff over & over again to figure it out. ;o)

All I can say is, "trial and error".

I don't use any of that code myself, since I prefer to use different icons for different people in my posts, rather than just replacing one all-encompassing icon with another one. Plus, I prefer to stick with the default LJ style.

I did, however, play around with that code just to see if it worked. It took me a couple of tries, and I don't think it works for all styles. But yeah, I did get it to work. And then I deleted the code and went back to the default style. ;)

You might be able to ask the user who wrote that tutorial for further help if you can't work it out. I'm sorry if I'm not as proficient in that area.
