I'm surprised at the english results and the number of links listed seems very few - it was only 13 for the top one there.
I guess the way that a lot of people "fake cut" to their journal in order to promote icons and fics might influence the results as well as the way that a lot of people friendslock a good portion of their journal, particularly if their interested in discussing it and they feel it is a sensitive issue.
I guess I should explain it better. On the front page links come in date order. As soon as we've figured out post got enough links we insert it into the feed. This allows to use it as a feed nicely as everything comes from top. If you want to sort by number of inbound links you should specify period in calendar. Certain posts have few hundreds links.
Speaking about friends yes... It is hard to track which posts people are reading as same people can post interesting stuff and boring stuff and even more so communities. This is tracking what people find valuable enough to link. But it looks like the blogging culture of linking to what you found interesting/valuable is not that popular in LJ :)
There seems to be a lot of people linking to entries back in their own journals...could there be something to filter out when a user links to a post in which they are the author? The "linked by" reads the ljusername, so I suppose an option could be created where if the linked username = the linker's username, that link does not count towards the total.
We started to filter the links to their own journal. However posts to communities by the same users are more complicated as there is no data in RSS about who posted the item. Someone should poke Brad to have it added. It should not be a big deal to implement while useful for many purposes.
Wow! That is awesome. I particularly like the Russian version, which is actually useful to track what people are discussing at a particular time. English too, to some extent.
Russian LiveJournal community is not so small though -- it's currently the second largest after US, according to stats:
The following are the 15 most popular countries LiveJournal is used in:
* United States - 3108159 * Russian Federation - 286104 * Canada - 247237 * United Kingdom - 204301 * Australia - 96072 * Philippines - 34516 * Ukraine - 32089 * Germany - 31721 * Singapore - 26655 * Finland - 25742 * Japan - 21381 * Netherlands - 19456 * New Zealand (Aotearoa) - 13624 * Israel - 12931 * Brazil - 12431
Yes. English version needs better filtering which we're working on.
Speaking about Russian community it is not small of course. LiveJournal is still #1 blogging site in Russia as far as I remember. However it is still less than 10% of english speaking population while in number of links certain posts attract it can well compete with English posts.
Reading this, it strikes me that Finland must be exceptionally active on Livejournal, compared to the size of the population. Finland has a population of between 4 and 5 millions, while Germany is well above 80 millions, and I believe Japan has a population greater than 120 millions. Has anyone ever tried to keep statistics on how many users there are per capita (or per 1000, or per 1 million) in individual countries?
