I was with you all with sympathy and /hugs until this:

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -Evelyn Beatrice Hall

I hope you're joking. I hope you know the actual quote is Voltaire, and it's: "I disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Call me a snob, but what even.

If you google the quote without the source, the top results all say, in some way, "often misattributed to Voltaire".

No, oceanplexian is actually right. It's a quote that is famously and commonly misattributed to Voltaire. I didn't know that until recently either though!

Ugh, LJ ated my comment. I have a "Quotationary" from Webster's with that quote attributed to him, though with the changed word.

I tried to respond with a Wikiquote link supporting the non-Voltaire attribution, but fell prey to the "comments with links to anywhere except a handful of approved sites are spam and therefore are screened" feature.

I really hate that feature.

Still, all support to LJ in fighting the scumbags.

Wait, people are trusting the INTERNETS over BOOKS? O.o That makes no sense since BOOKS ARE WAY OLDER THAN THE INTERNETS.

Now I'm totally confused. Isn't Voltaire older than that Evelyn woman?

I'm more inclined to trust books over the internet. I mean really people. Seriously, you're trusting the INTERNET over books? REALLY?

Thank you! I was all o.O That is so not said by Evelyn Beatrice Hall. I mean she may have "borrowed" it from Voltaire, but yeah, so not hers originally.

Mind if I join your snob party? ;)

See, I was going to compliement Andreas on getting it right, it's so rare to know she said it but attributed it to Voltaire incorrectly, so many people get it wrong.

Again, people are trusting the INTERNET over books? Do those of you quoting/linking Wikipedia do know that ANYONE can and does update that site, it's not done by "scholars" as it were, average Joe's update it (oft times with incorrect info). Kinda like anything you see/read on IMDB.com is updated mostly by fans of movies/tv/actors and not by the production companies or actor's agents.

*headdesk*

I have not read either books by Voltaire or Ms. Evelyn so sue me if I have it incorrectly quoted. But I don't trust the internet nearly as much as I trust most books.
