Hello LiveJournal!

I'm going to take a few moments to explain the plan behind LiveJournal's recent announcement to purge suspended accounts. I know the initial announcement was a couple of months ago, but I assure you we are still moving forward with this. In fact, we halted all account purging while we modified our worker scripts to handle ( Read more... )

Thanks for explaining this in detail!

I'm not sure if this will be answered in the news post, since it's not up yet, but I figured I'd ask anyway. :-)

1) After the suspended accounts have been purged, will the usernames be available for other people to adopt?
2) What about inactive usernames?
3) What is the period of time in which an active account becomes inactive? A year of no activity? Two? Longer/shorter?

I was wondering # 3 myself as well. And what counts as No activity? Not logging on? No posts? No posts and no commenting other places?

"A journal is defined as inactive if it has not been logged into for 24 consecutive months. A community is defined as inactive if has not been updated for 24 consecutive months. Once an account is eligible to be purged for inactivity, the owner will be sent an email to alert them of the inactive status. The owner will then have two weeks to log into the journal or post to their community to prevent it from being deleted. If the owner does not log in or post, the account will be deleted and treated like any other deleted account (the owner will have 30 days to log in and undelete the account to prevent it from being purged)."

1) Yes, once the suspended or inactive account is actually purged, anyone can obtain that name by renaming their account to that name. Renaming costs a fee of $15 USD, though, so it's not free.

2) Inactive usernames will be purged after the suspended purging process is begun and everything is for sure working well/correctly.

3) Inactivity is 24 consecutive months of not logging in at least one time (for personal journals), or 24 consecutive months of no new entries (for communities).
