as well as no notification of comments i have suddenly started getting a landslide of virtual gift notifications, is this why??? the function itself is switched off again (for now??)

LJ offered a free virtual gift (the snowflake cookie), so a lot of people have been taking advantage of this, either out of genuine holiday spirit, or as a prank.

I don't think it *was* ever mentioned - it just went viral.

It was available just for a short time, but is gone now. We'll have some free v-gifts in the future, but they'll only be available to send to people with whom you're mutually friended.

so i get comment notifications from community posts but not from my personal lj

why was it only made available to some?

what was the criteria for who was given a free v-gift?

people gave the free gift to whoever they wanted, it wasn't done by lj. people just noticed that the snowflake cookie had a price of $0.00 and sent them out.

I'm pretty sure it was a glitch. It showed up in the v-gifts section, free of charge and people started sending them out. They're gone now.

At the time, it was shown as "free" when it shouldn't have been - so for those who sent it for the last week or so, it was something they just happened to notice in the shop. It's not available anymore, but we plan to have some available *for real* in the coming months (only with the proper sending restrictions, so that you can only send to mutual friends).

I won't hold my breath. There haven't been any free v-gifts or anything like that in probably a year.

This. And it's so telling that it actually was just a glitch and not a truly free feature in the name of Holiday spirits (whch was what I and many f-lsters supposed and where happy about).

Yeah, I can't help but shake my head at all the people commenting at how wonderful it was that LJ did that. It wasn't anything they did for us. It was a glitch, nothing more.
