I'm confused. I thought we were switching to Windows Live?

Why should those of us who don't ahve windows live have to do that? I think that's an optional extra, not a requirement otherwise it's useless to me. And Psi is also whining that the SSL cert is invalid. Or rather that the names don't match.

Why should you ask a question of a question?

No, both services will exist to fill the needs of both browser-based and client-based messaging.

Gmail has browser-based XMPP messaging.

GMail uses custom binary protocol with XMPP transport. See tcpdump of gtalk client, for example.

Also, this leds to custom encryption (ssl-google-token), custom MUCs and unsupporting of such features as metacontacts.

So they'll work together then?

They're not working together. They're working separately.

LJtalk will continue to be a XMPP/Jabber service.

LJ Messenger, for some reason, uses the Windows Live ID system to provide people with a Facebook-like chat, limited to the website itself.

Is there some compelling reason that Jabber doesn't fill both needs?

I went looking for available open source browser implementations of Jabber clients and there's not a lot out there that's good, it seems. And them developing one from scratch would've been very time consuming, I think.
