popularity on livejournal

LiveJournal is primarily a journaling site, rather than a social networking site, and so it's interesting to note that there's a different way of judging who the "popular" "influential" users are. I know that there aren't many people who are universally recognized, but I'm sure you can all think of someone who's highly respected in your group of friends.

There may even be some users outside of your group of friends, but are still recognized by a large portion of your Friends list. For example, most people probably don't know bradfitz personally, but you probably know that he started LiveJournal, and chances are that your friends know who he is, too. There are probably similar people based on your interests (popular icon makers? famous fic writers? etc), too.

So, I'm wondering:

* What makes someone popular/influential on LJ?
* What makes someone highly-respected within a certain group?
* What attributes make someone well-known? (Either in a positive or a negative way)

(There's a second part to this that I'll post in a few days, but I think this particular topic could generate a fair deal of discussion that I decided to split them up.)
