Facebook & Twitter widgets

Jul 01, 2014 16:44

We've added 2 new Widgets to the Friends Feed page in the redesigned version of the site which allow you to view your Facebook and Twitter feeds. These were added so you can stay up to date about friends & news at a quick glance without having to fully break away from reading the longer entries you are reading here. We wanted to both describe how ( Read more... )

My immediate concern.

Somebody on my f-list links their LJ to their facebook account to see updates.

Is there any way from that whereby my facebook could ever be linked to my LJ?

Because I absolutely do not want facebook people being able to track me back to my LJ.

While I do not plan on using these widgets, this would be my immediate and dire concern as well. I have purposefully avoiding ever doing anything that would link my FB and LJ together because of this.

So much of my personal safety relies on keeping those two accounts FAR FAR AWAY from each other.

I suppose it depends on how much data Facebook mine.

Person 'X' links their LJ and FB accounts. FB could then theoretically harvest the IP addresses of people on 'X's f-list, and compare those to the IP addresses of people on their facebook, and connect FB names to LJ identities?

That is specifically why I quit Facebook about 4 years ago.

I took the hard line approach to separating Facebook from everything else by using it on a completely separate browser from everything else I do online. Would that work for you?

I had not even thought of that - that is a REALLY good idea! Thank you!

No problem. Facebook struck me as creepy long ago. And even though I'm not shy about my LJ being identifiable to me, every time I think that maybe there'd be an advantage to connecting the two accounts Facebook goes and does something even creepier.

Edit: Back to the separate browser thing, I don't even click on links inside of Facebook. If something looks interesting, I'll go back to my main browser and search for it.

I have the scripts for Adblock Plus that kill all facebook tracking widgets, so theoretically I should be safe from facebook creepiness...

I should not be forced to use ad-block or a any other non-LJ script. I want an LJ option to EXPUNGE these "features" from my LJ!

I have crappy WiFi. I want no "features" which slow down page loading time &/or make me pay more $$ for my monthly internet service.

Considering that several major internet sites have recently disabled Adblock cooperation, I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to trust that when talking about Facebook.

Yahoo was the most brazen about it - they flat out told users that they knew what was best for everyone and this is the way it's going to be.

I would imagine the ad-block people will jump back ahead in the arms race soon. But consumers do always have the ability to vote with their feet and abandon Yahoo over it.

Which, actually, people still use Yahoo?!

I'm what some people call a "cord cutter" - I don't have any local TV, satellite, or cable TV service. I get all of my news from the internet. For international news, I'm happy to look at Al Jaziera or BBC (much better than any US reporting). But for things closer to home, I have trouble finding anyone who is not biased. So, yes, I still use Yahoo, because for news it's not any worse than any other option. The problem is, it's not any better than the other options either.

Sympathies. Gosh, I used to use Flickr quite a lot, but then... I think it was one of their redesigns broke the site functionality for me.

So I moved to Photobucket.

And then they redesigned that and broke it too.

I do the same. It gives me that little bit of extra peace of mind at least.
