New Feature Idea: Adding a '+1' Feature

May 29, 2014 11:36

Hello!

As noted in our news post a few days ago about the redesign, we want to get better about asking for your feedback on new feature ideas or upcoming changes prior to rolling them out. We'll be reviving this lj_feedback community as part of that endeavor, and this 'new feature idea' post will get things started. (We're still monitoring the redesign post ( Read more... )

new feature idea, +1 ability

I do like the idea of making a +1 button so one can agree with a comment or post just to let the poster know you saw it, read it and agree with it without you having to make a full comment.

I also like the ability to be able to turn it of for one or the other or both comments and original post.

as for #4 I like to see my comment they way they are now. Main comment comes in, any comment to the main comment under it in the order they were posted. Don't go messing with the ordering of the comments. If someone comments on a comment, I don't want it sorted by most popular or "liked" comment. I want the comments to comments to be obvious to what comment it is attached to and in the order they are recieved. FB does the most popular or trending crap and half the time it makes no sense at all. Don't change something just for the sake of change. If it's not broken don't fuss with it.

I will reiterate, please don't try to make LJ into another FB.

I agree with all of this.

As said here by donnad; and also must emphasis re #4 comment. Don't muck around with read/response/react chronology of posts or their layout. The plus one is just for individual responses, please, and not a record keeping/status devise!

My LJ page is mostly dead, very few people comment on posts anymore (me included), but a +1 feature would allow me to "like" friends posts even if I don't comment on them. It's really hard to know if anyone is reading unless they comment, this way you'd get a bit more "interaction."

For busy communities I could see where sorting by "popularity" might be useful. However, it should NOT be the default, that should remain as-is. The option however could be useful.

100 percent agree - do *not* rearrange the comments in 'most liked' or whatever order, leave them in the order they were posted. That will cause the *least* confusion, especially in a long discussion.

Comments by chronological order is definitely not going anywhere, nor would a 'top comments' sort order be made the default.

It's more that if this gets implemented so that things have the possibility of being ranked, then it would seem reasonable that some viewers would want to see things ordered by 'most +1s' on some posts, even if their default viewing setting is 'chronological'. So there would need to be a button/link as you view a post to say "show me the highest ranked comments first, please" and the page would update to re-order things that way for that viewer.

For a community like this one that may make a certain ammount of sense. For the conversations I usually have on LJ though even giving the option just seems like a ludicrous idea. Conversations happen in chronological fashion and giving the option to sort them any other way can only lead to people jumping in taking things out of context.

As long as I have the option to just stop that kind of thing in my own spaces, I don't care, but it's a really strange thought in my opinion.

I'm indifferent to this feature (though I would prefer that it be set up to opt-in rather than opt-out) but if it is to be implemented I agree with donnad's caveats.

Oh gosh yes, please please don't go messing with comment ordering. We don't need upvotes or any of that junk. And one thousand agreements with "if it's not broken, don't fuss with it."

I don't think we need a +1 or "like" button. I think it's lazy and only makes it easier to avoid conversation. However I'm not particularly against it as long as its use is as customizable as possible.

The rest of donnad's comment is spot on, however. Comment views need to be left alone, or at the very least, we need to have the ability to keep them the way that they are.

I definitely agree, don't weight comment display by how many likes they get. That just screws with the reading experience.

Blimey! They revive old comms and all kinds of people pop up. Just goes to show how connected things used to be via friends' journals.
