Profile Page Design - Complete List of Feedback

Nov 14, 2008 15:04

We have put together a new post which details out of all the specific feedback on the new profile we have received in all of our previous posts. We did this to let everyone know that we are listening to you, and that this is what we have heard. The following list is not intended to make any judgments on the items listed. We are not saying that ( Read more... )

Although it's probably covered under the Whitespace and color concernes, I think specific mention of migraine triggering should have been included in the list.

It was specifically discussed, but this list is the tangible, physical changes proposed and suggested.

I've always found excessive white space to trigger migraines; they actually start to try to creep on when I'm reading a normally set comments page, which is weird. I think it's really a contrast issue for a lot of people, because after a while, I end up highlighting what I'm reading just to not have to stare at so much blank area.

Is it possible it's not just the whitespace, but also the very wide columns? I've read stuff (a few years back) that indicated excessively wide columns made it harder to read something.

Thus a combination of the two may be a trigger?

Quite agreed. Excessive whitespace, particularly with bold black contrasts, is an issue for me.

Also, forcing the info page to "user mode" in my browsers to get rid of the white makes it rather ugly.

I think the profile should be changed back until the trigger is identified. This isn't about customer satisfaction anymore, it's about customer health.

The process by which certain types of lighting, visual patterns, foods, etc. trigger migraines is still being researched but it's well-known that these things can cause migraines in people sensitive to them.

Here's an article that has some info: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3534065.stm

Excerpt:

Dr Shepherd believes certain types of patterns, which are known to make nerve cells within the visual system highly excitable, are probably to be blame ( ... )

Any page with a stark white background display will trigger a migraine for me. There are plenty of studies that have covered how light can trigger migraines, and since when we're looking at a monitor we're looking at, in essence, a box pushing light at our eyes, yes, changes to the way things are displayed on that box can trigger migraines. Looking at this page, for example -- the white background means I have to wear sunglasses while reading/replying to cut down the odds of a three day long skull-splitter.

Maybe this will help some. I provided it already in an earlier reply on a previous post, but nobody seemed to notice or reply.

If you're photosensitive at all, I would say so. For me it's come to the point where I can only look at profiles twice a day, max, because that's the limit on how often I can take my abortive.
