Update on adult flagging concerns

Nov 30, 2007 17:15

We've been reading your comments and want to talk about some of the questions that have come up the most often. These are just the top things that we want to clarify and we'll update in more detail again next week if there's more that needs to be addressed ( Read more... )

:/ Still not so happy.

Also, what about definitive policy so we know exactly what constitutes as things? I mean, we're asking a lot, I know, we haven't gotten any decent policy in awhile, but my definition of things probably differs a great deal from Six Apart's.

Most communities with fanfiction, etc. that are 'mature' or 'adult' insist on them being labelled and LJ-cut, anyway. I don't get what this system is meant to achieve other than being the first step towards Boldthrough II.

I think it just means that moderators of these 'mature content' communities no longer need to manually verify the age of users. For community mods dealing with thousands of users, I imagine that's a blessed relief. :D

I would agree, except with the fact that I still have no clue what constitutes "mature content". For example, conservative american republicans probably view the communities I maintain as the embodiment of Satan, but to me there are simple health and sex Q&A communities. Also, in the Sex Ed Q&A community, we've limited the age group to 16 + (Age of Consent in most of the world, but not everywhere, but as a worldwide average, it's pretty good)... so how does that work compared to the 18+ rules? Does it mean we can continue to operate as normal until LJ's conservative american republicans start to flag our content?

And if it means something for my communities, then what does it mean for our nearest rivals which have memberships in the 10s of 1000s and don't restrict age at all!?!

Yeah, for me, as a maintainer... more questions than answers or relief(!) here.

le sigh.

Yeah, wow.

To me, the adult content flagging thing is kind of dumb--if someone underage really wants to see the stuff, then I'm sure they'll come up with some way to look at it.

Yes, to people who work for, like and use AOL my blog is the embodiment of Satan as well. A lot of those people have pretty much told me so. I agree with many comments posted here that this new system of flagging (ie, snitching, ie let's all rat each other out, ie no content unsuitable for a five year old should be publicly viewable on LJ anymore) should not have ever been implemented. I know LJ lost me over it. They can "clarify" now all they want to: first of all they should have had a plan easy enough to explain to all the five year olds they want on LJ in the first place. Second of all, no matter how clearly they can explain it (they haven't explained it clearly yet, this post is like Chinese to me) they can still kiss my ass. I don't know if I'll ever put my blogs back up again, but if I do, I promise you it won't be on any LJ or SUP or SixApart platform. LJ just blows.

If people can see/know that the flag happened, it probably could through hearsay, but I think that would only happen if people didn't bother looking at the post themselves.
