One of the best kept secrets about the LiveJournal community is how incredibly generous you all are. It's not just the fact that so many of you volunteer to help LJ out, or are such active participants in communities online. It's what you do to support communities offline that makes us so proud of what LJ is. (A recent example was the way you all ( Read more... )

Oh, DonorsChoose is great! That's what TWoP uses for their Tubey's Kids auctions. Very good choice of charity. I love that you can pick specific projects to fund.

What don't you understand? LJ is involved because they are essentially donating $30 for every person that e-mails them for a gift certificate. It's like a free sample, for us, so we can then proceed to support the charity with our own money and encourage others to do the same.

It's a shame it's US-centric, as a UK girl I'd love to have participated, but I'm pleased LJ is supporting it nonetheless.

Ditto. It would be nice to be able to lend support from a community as large and as global as LJ is to places outside the United States of America.

If an international community like LJ drums up enough support, they probably will expand it to being an international program. Plus, it costs you nothing to spend $30 of SixApart's money.

I'm going to be a teacher in a year and a half, so yeah, I really applaud this effort. I'd really love to help.

But I can't.

Hopefully they'll look into international charities in the future. For a start, though, I think it's fine for a U.S.-based company to work with a U.S.-based charity.

U.S.-based, but with two international offices. I don't see why they can't organise anything there.

Now it's time for all of us to show the world how LJ can help teach our kids. We can't wait to see what you do.

Except those who live in other countries, of course. ;)

I think in this case it's understandable. They can make a better effort to be inclusive when it comes to contests, but as a fund raising effort, I think it's great that LJ is doing it at all.

LJ has made it clear for a while now that they don't make extra efforts to be inclusive of international users, so I don't expect them to start fundraising in other countries (though of course that would be nice). Hopefully they'll work toward that.

My main issue right now is with contests, as I think there must be a way to imagine them differently so that all users could participate.
