Updates to Omniture on LiveJournal

Sep 17, 2007 12:25

We’re making a change to the way we've been gathering statistics on LiveJournal and wanted to let you know the plan and details in advance.

Back in January, we announced that we'd start using Omniture SiteCatalyst as the system that lets us dig deeper into how members and visitors use LiveJournal. Back then, we had only used Omniture's tracking ( Read more... )

Also, why is this not being posted to news? Users who don't read lj_biz will also want to opt out.

Because a good portion of users don't really give a crap/don't have any idea about this or the past year's screw-ups.

Well, I don't think knowledge of all the screw-ups is really necessary to understand this post. It's by no means niche information, so it should be made more widely available.

Well, most users don't care, and won't unless it directly affects them. While this might, it's not something huge either. And with it being here instead of news, they most likely won't see it.

Take for example the fandom comms I participate in. No one had heard anything about all of LJ's screw-ups until the strikeout, and then they panicked. Not before, and not after much, either. As long as they get their porn and their fandoms remain mostly left alone, they won't complain about something like this.

I don't really get what you're arguing. That what they don't know won't hurt them? I just think that if there are so many people here who are creeped out by this and plan to opt-out (though I'm not among them) there would probably also be lots of people feeling this way in the general LJ population. So they should be told how to opt out.

I'm not explaining myself well, am I? Most LJ users don't actively read this journal, and I'm not sure how many people read news (I know I don't, since it's nothing but advertisements). Yes, it's still affects them even if they don't know. But if they don't know, then they aren't going to do anything about it. It's a bad move on LJ's part, but not on the scale of strikeout, which really got people's attention. This sucks, but this isn't anywhere near that level and therefore will get less attention. Strikeout was amazing in the way that it made people care, because it had a visible, direct effect. This...doesn't.

Sorry if I'm still not making sense.

So LJ can be sneaky like that.

Duh. D:

Because it's not an advertisement. News posts are written by their marketing person. All actual news is shunted off to lj_biz so that most people won't have any idea what's going on.

I don't give two shits about being able to see porn or whatever, but I think this is really disingenuous.

Hell, a new CEO apparently isn't news, so really, what do we expect?

If it isn't an ADVERTISEMENT disguised as "sponsorship" - it isn't "News" dangerousedge September 19 2007, 04:17:43 UTC
apparently because it's only NEWS if LJ can plug an advertising sponsor like Diet Pepsi Max and HP.

Perhaps because if you take a look at the News it's updated on a monthly basis and if you take a look at what's posted there and what's posted here, it WILL get a mention.

As to why it's posted here in the first place. Um. What on earth did you think this place is for??? O.o

If you're concerned about missing stuff, put this comm on your watch list. It's that simple. Seriously.

ZOMG, RLY? I had nooooo idea! Because I totally got a comment on the first page by being out of the loop!

My concern is for other users who may not watch lj_biz. And yes, I have my doubts about whether LJ will post this information to news in a timely fashion, since their practices haven't exactly been excessively transparent in recent months. And if they can interrupt their monthly posting schedule for a virtually content-free post about Diet Pepsi Max, I'm sure it wouldn't kill them to do it for some actual news.

I'm sorry but there isn't really very much news-value in this. Statistics gathering happens everywhere on the internet, LJ has just chosen to tell us they're doing it. That's the only difference. They were already doing it, they've just made a minor adjustment to it.

And when stuff gets posted here it's hardly hidden. The comm is listed on the FRONT PAGE when you log in. All you have to do is pay attention to when it was last updated.

Oh and additionally. Like you said, not everybody is watching this place. What makes you think everybody is watching the news? Just because it comes as a standard when making a journal doesn't mean people don't remove it.

So what's the difference anyway?

Ideally, for something like the announcement of an opt-out system, I would want all users to be notified via e-mail. But I know there's no way LJ will ever do that, and posting to news is the next-best thing.

So, if you can't remedy a problem 100%, you shouldn't try to remedy it at all? That makes sense.
