about sponsored features

I know there's probably more to say about sponsored communities, but I want to shift the focus for a minute to "sponsored features" to talk about the changes we're making there ( Read more... )

Will the SMS features be avaliable to people outside the US?

With all this trouble, it had damned well better be. I still have to pay long distance for voice posts; if this advertising crap is for another feature that I, as a paid user, cannot use... I may become a LOT less patient about all this.

I'm interested in this question too.

I feel like half the features I get as a permanent user are useless because I live outside Asia. =( Not really complaining because I understand that the main userbase is from the US, but still...I'm just a little sad.

Probably not. So, don't keep your hopes up.

I really doubt it, and if there is, they better make voice posts available for non-US users first, or it would look really bad on them.

I agree with that.

But they're very different things. It costs me the same amount to SMS a person in the US as it does to SMS a person in Australia. Call costs are very different!

If they had something setup with SMS, it would probably (no guarantee, cause I just plain don't know) cost them the same inside or outside the USA. As far as I'm aware, they've been hunting for phone providers outside the USA that will work with them appropriately for the voice posts, and not getting the kind of co-operation that they had from within the USA.

Well, that's Australia (and maybe just the company you're using, I don't know), but in many countries is more expensive to send a SMS outside the country than inside.

They might have, but it'd still look bad that they can manage to get something sponsored for everybody (more users to be grateful to the company, good publicity, etc.), when they can't for paid users.

Also, I can make posts at gabcast.com via SIPBroker telephone numbers without any problems.

LIke I said, I dunno the costs elsewhere (though it is the same with the major phone companies in Aus.), but it's still not a good comparison to say that SMS shouldn't be made available to all until they get the phone posting available outside the US. They might both come off phones, but they're different things.

I know they're different things! I was trying to explain why make that feature (or any other that might be related to the location of the user) available for everybody would look bad on them.

When we don't even have access to voice post numbers?

You optimist! ;)
