Last night me and Natalya went to the central
department store across the street. It was the first time that i
realized how far away from home i really was. We were trying ot find a
calculator and it was so hard to explain that to someone who doesn't
speak english. We thought we finally got someone to understand what we
wanted and then she brought us a bottle of face cream. WE eventually
found the calculators and they were right by the cameras so i had them
take a look at mine. THey didn't know how to fix it and they told me to
go to Bangkok. We're going there next week. I'm not going to worry too
much about getting it fixed though because everyone siad that they will
burn me their pictures on to a cd. After the shopping we ate at a pizza
place because Natalya's stomach couldn't handle anything else. We got
tomato pizza and tea smoothies. then it was time for the night bazaar.
This was one of the coolest experiences i have ever had We got a taxi to
the bazaar for only 20 baht which is less than a dollar. Then i went on
to spend all of the money that i had on various things at the bazaar. I
liked the bartering and me and Natalya got very thrifty by the end of
the night. at one point we got 6 lanterns for 600 baht! that's about 15
dollars. i had to buy two very large purses to carry everything.
Today was a very busy day. We
started out at 7:30 by eating breakfast at the hotel. They have
everything from omlettes and cocoa puffs to pad thai and rice soup. It
was very good. I of course prefer the thai food. It is so good. There's
always fresh fruit everywhere.
Then we went to a Hmong village up on the mountain. THe front village
consists of shops. Since i had no more thai currency i had to borrow
from helen. I got an awesome hand woven bedspread, an elephant statue,
and a story cloth for less than 8 dollars. Then we went to the back
village where the people live. it was very interesting to see how they
lived. I thought that it would be harder to see this way of life, but
everyone is so happy. It almost seems like a better life than that in
america. They treat eachother with respect and always have a smile on
their face.
In the back of the village there is a temple 1000 steps up the mountain.
It has a beautiful gold buddha and an even more beautiful view down the
hillside.
After the village we went ot the Doi Suthep temple. This is a very
large temple and it was very interesting to see the way that they
buddhists worship. There were monks everywhere and i got a blessing.
THey have someone else tie a white string around your wrist because they
are not allowed to touch women, then on the other side of the temple
they sprinkle holy water on you while blessing you. Then we went to a
Thai Fast food restaurant. WAAAAY better than McDonald's. I got
vegetable noodle soup with egg tofu and rice. Then we went to the jade
factory.
