junmyeon finds an old manga store two streets away from his house
A/N: spoilers(?) for Evangelion
It is on the Friday evening after he moved to his new apartment when Junmyeon realized that he has misplaced the first volume of his favorite manga. He tries not to panic and searches through all the shelves in the house, going through the neatly placed items one by one to ensure that the book isn't hidden in any blind corners. When there is still no sign of it after he combs through the entire apartment, he unties the trash bag lying in the kitchen, and starts his journey of retrieving his treasure. The dust that accumulates along with the rubbish irritates his eyes, but he still looks through the entire bag carefully, afraid that he has thrown it away by accident. It takes him three tries before he concedes defeat, and acknowledges the fact that the book is gone for real. The fact that it is his fault just makes everything worse.
The spring air is chilly when he leaves his house, heading to the nearest mart to get some daily necessities before grabbing dinner and scouting the place. The mart is considerably small, barely bigger than a 7-11, and has a lot lesser snacks as compared to the E-mart near his old house, but it is functional, seeing how he barely cooks and mostly lives on ramyun.
This area is startlingly different from Gangnam that he is used to. He grew up seeing shops closely lined up on the streets, most of them opening till late at night while his house lies on the other side of the district, tucked away in a corner. There is never a lack of people on the streets, their fast footsteps taking them to their desired location. Here, it reminds him of those places where the protagonist of a drama will lie low at before making their comeback. He assumes that there is a market to the left of his house with all the empty stalls and cart; all covered with a flimsy sheet of plastic.
He walks further down the street hoping to find an open restaurant amidst the houses, his tired body protesting at the thought of having to cook dinner and clean up, even if it is just a ramyun pot.
The door to all the houses remains shut, a clear sign that this is mainly a residential area and it is not till he makes a turn that he sees dim lights emitting from a store right at the end of an alley. If he is the normal, rational Junmyeon, he will have made a u-turn and resign to his fate of having to cook dinner. However, the fatigue and sadness from losing his precious book apparently addled with his brain, prompting him to walk towards that dubious store.
When he gets closer to the source of light, it becomes obvious as to why it doesn't look as bright as normal stores on the outside. Plastered on the doors and windows of the shop are manga posters that range from something as old school as Dragon Ball and Tokyo Babylon to the more recent Reborn! and Fairy Tail. The corners of the older posters are tattered, reminiscent of the comic shops that he used to visit when he was younger.
He pushes the door gently, hearing the pleasant tinkle of the bell and a few seconds later, a greeting follows. "Hello."
Junmyeon turns to the source of the voice, surprised to see someone who looks like he's barely out of college manning the store instead of the old man that he is expecting. He nods politely, shuffling towards the bookshelves before the owner calls out again. "What series are you looking for? It will be faster if I help you with it since the comics aren't really organized properly." He confesses sheepishly, scratching the back of his head in an oddly endearing manner.
Junmyeon wasn't looking for anything in particular when he steps into the store, simply drawn to the place due to his love for comics and heading for the aisle of books out of reflex. He is about to shake his head before he remembers the volume he misplaced.
"Do you have the first volume of Evangelion?" He asks; hope brimming within him as he surveys the surroundings. This place seems older than most of the stores he'll see in the city, and somehow that makes him believe in the possibility of finding older mangas that are no longer in production.
The owner looks conflicted for a moment, scrunching his nose as he thinks about the question.
"It's okay if you don't have it though."
"I have it," he starts slowly, bending below the counter to retrieve something, "but it is a personal copy."
He is clutching tightly onto the book, as if he's afraid Junmyeon will pull it out of his grasp any time soon. Shinji and Misato is plastered on the cover just like how he remembers it to be, and he simply smiles at the other's reaction, understanding his love for an inanimate object. "I see. It's okay then. I just lost my copy today, so I was looking to replace it. Don't worry about it though."
"Wait," the younger boy calls out when Junmyeon is about to leave the shop. "Do you want to read it here?"
He finds out that the other boy's name is Chanyeol and that he is indeed twenty-three when he is comfortably seated in the sofa at the back of the shop, a cup of instant ramyun set in front of him.
Chanyeol sits at the opposite couch, long limbs crossed in an awkward manner as he tries to squeeze himself into the tiny seat. Junmyeon initially thought that he was there to spy on him, ensuring that no harm comes to his book but instead he's leafing through the newest copy of Weekly Shonen Jump, catching up on the stories he has yet to read.
Junmyeon brings the manga closer to his face, breathing in the scent that only old books will have. It has been years since this volume stopped production and judging from the yellowing of the pages, he is sure that it came from one of the first few batches. He takes in the art carefully, relishing in the touch of a hard copy and greedily absorbs the dialogues even when he has all of them committed to heart.
It isn't till Shinji's first encounter with an Angel that he realized something is drawn on the margins of the pages. On the empty spaces, declaration of wanting to be the best Evangelion is written along with some powers that are necessary in order to triumph everyone else. Junmyeon quickly flips through the next few pages, seeing miniature drawings of the characters or simply notes on how to take down Angels effectively.
"Did you write this?" He asks amusedly, waving the page he finds most interesting in front of Chanyeol.
The other boy flushes in embarrassment, a blush creeping up his cheeks while the tips of his ears are tinted red. "Yeah, I was really into this when I was younger." He confesses, letting out a nervous laugh as he tries to cover his face with the magazine.
"It's cute," Junmyeon assures him. He really finds it cute. "I dreamt of being an Evangelion too."
"Really?" Chanyeol asks, his impossibly large eyes widening by a fraction.
"Yeah."
He didn't expect to spend so much time with Chanyeol, reminiscing childhood memories about their favorite characters as well as the different genres of manga they're interested in.
He is curious about why a university graduate is working in a manga shop where he barely makes enough to make end meets. But he has his own reasons for moving to this place, and he thinks that Chanyeol will have one too.
"I should get going." He says, brushing away imaginary dust from his pants as he gets up the couch.
Chanyeol offers to clear the rubbish, asking him to run along before it gets too late as well as nag about how he should not wander around so late at night.
"This place is really safe, but you never know what will happen, and I don't want anything to happen to you." It is something any decent human being will wish for, but Junmyeon still feels a surge of warmth assaulting his heart as he bids his thank you.
"Wait." Chanyeol grabs his wrist when he turns around to leave. He looks uncertain, eyes shifting nervously and Junmyeon can feel the dilemma radiating off him.
"I want you to have this," he takes a deep breath and shoves a book into Junmyeon's open palms. The first volume of Evangelion is looking back at him and he stares at the taller boy in disbelief.
"Isn't this something important to you?"
"Yeah, it is." Chanyeol tries to laugh off his nervousness, steeling himself for what is about to happen next. "But I think you can be something important to me too in the future. So I want you to have this. Aren't we suppose to give our most precious stuff to the person we value the most?"
There is a hint of apprehension in his voice as he asks the question and it makes Junmyeon wants to ruffle his hair in affection even though Chanyeol is so much taller.
"You're really cute." He settles for pinching the other's cheek, taking pleasure in seeing the smooth skin being all stretched.
"So will you come back again tomorrow?" Chanyeol asks in a small voice, no traces of the confidence he had previously remaining in him.
Junmyeon nods, eyes crinkling as he smiles genuinely. He gives Chanyeol a small squeeze on his hands before saying his goodnight and promising to drop by again tomorrow night.
As he walks along the deserted street, he can't help but think that maybe losing his precious book is a sign that he will get something even more valuable in return.
