Uh oh.

Have managed to bugger up my computer. You know when you get those grey boxes that come up, saying 'This website needs this software to work. Download it now, it's safe! Really!'? Well, on the spur of the moment I clicked 'OK' instead of 'Cancel'. This downloaded some adware onto my computer, and the computer was working fine, until D tried to ( Read more... )

Ah, Lizzy. You poor thing. At least you can salvage some things, so it's not a total disaster (although it does come close). But we have all learned a valuable lesson at your expense. NEVER click on pop up boxes. :)

Don’t wipe that computer yet! Your papers and things can be saved!

First, find someone who has a CD burner and burn a copy of Knoppix or other Linux livecd. Then, find someone (possibly the same someone) to boot your computer using the livecd, and from there you can copy everything important on the computer to an external hard drive or to a networked computer.

Finally, remember that using Mozilla as your browser prevents 90% of these problems, even if you accidently click on something bad.  ;)

The same exact thing happened to me, except I didn't accidentally click yes for the adware/spyware. It just sort of built up into my computer until it had total melt down and its hard drive had to be wiped out.
