Exploring (narrative)

Idle hands, it has been said, are the devil's workshop, and an idly curious mind must be even more so. To this end, Elizabeth has recently taken it into her head to explore the so-called Mansion from top to bottom. It's a strange, big building, this Mansion - and who knows what she may come across ( Read more... )

Something about Constance's demeanor (especially towards Diogenes) had unnerved her, so Corrie had taken to exploring the Mansion in search of a place to hide, in case -- well, just in case, really. She also wanted to have a better idea of the layout of the place. (Special Agent Pendergast would have been proud.)

On the fifth floor, there had been a door in a dead-end hallway partly hidden by the shadows, which look promising. She entered the room -- only to find it completely taken over by a band of spiders and their cobwebs. There was no way she was staying in this room a minute longer. However, as she turned towards the door to exit, she heard the sharp click of it opening and saw it swing ajar. Letting out a small (reflexive) shriek, she was relieved (and slightly embarrassed) to see a relatively harmless-looking woman standing in front of her.

Corrie grinned sheepishly. "Um. Hey. Sorry about that. I thought you were somebody else."

Typist: ... I couldn't help it. Time period clash!

Elizabeth took in the odd-looking (to her eyes) girl in a quick, startled moment, and took a cautious step into the room. "Indeed? And is it good or ill that I am not?"

"It's a good thing, definitely," Corrie replied, then awkwardly stuck out a hand. "I'm Corrie, by the way. Corrie Swanson."

Elizabeth could hardly help but smile, and took Corrie's hand lightly, with a dipping half-curtsy. "I am Elizabeth Bennet," she introduced herself. "At your service."

OOC: I really do fail at Austenite manners...! XD

Corrie grinned, wondering why the name sounded so familiar, then shaking it off (she never paid close attention to her English teacher). "Same to you, I think. This place is absolutely endless isn't it? It kinda makes you wonder who built it and why we're all here."

"Oh, quite!" Elizabeth nodded fervently - these were just the things that had led her to exploring the halls early this morning. "Every floor one finds, there seems to be another staircase leading eternally upwards. I imagine it might well be the same going down into the cellars, but I have not been that direction as of yet."

"And it only seems to be a few stories tall from the outside," Corrie mused. "Jesus, this place gives me the creeps, sometimes. Anyways. Where are you from, Elizabeth?"

Perhaps, she thought, the better question to ask was 'when'.

"___ County, in the southern part of England," she answered promptly, and in good old Austenite censorial fashion. "And for yourself--?"
