Dorian Gray - Like woah!

Just finished "The Picture of Dorian Gray". It is just amazing! It is so Victorian in its obsessive introspection and yet so unconventional in the same breadth! It is the perfect companion to "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde". The author revels in Gray's love of beauty, but at the same time the portrait is suppurating in the attic for his sins. I am going to recommend it for Book Club so that I can burble at length about it. It is so morally immoral or the other way around. Wilde's epigrams of opposites have so affected me that I hardly know which way is up any more.

Also forgot to mention that I finished reading "The Lighthouse" by PD James last week. For the very first time, I guessed who the culprit was correctly. I picked up the background clue which gave me the name, though I could not guess the motive. As usual, all the characters lead bleak emotional lives against a background of lost religious faith. Only slightly off note is that Dalgliesh comes down with SARS, but still manages to figure out the vital clue! Not quite so severe or acute then....
