I found my piercing kit a few days ago, it had been lost when we moved, inside the kit was a baggie of assorted surgical steel body jewelry (labret studs, curved barbells, captive bead rings, several horseshoes and replacement beads for all in varying colors sizes and styles) 2 used (hollow) piercing needles, and *squee* one brand new, never been opened, hermetically sealed, individually packaged, 16g piercing needle!!!
Of course I couldn't resist the urge for long and after several days with no sleep it made perfect sense to go about poking some new holes in my face. I was so tired I couldn't see straight, I washed my hands and got to work cleaning the stuff I needed and brushing and rinsing my mouth out, etc. Then I climbed up onto the counter and sat in front of the mirror so I could see (My eyesight is terrible even with my glasses but I cant afford new ones.) and using the old scar from my first lip piercing I went at it. Going from the outside in using the old scar as a guide (POKE ME HERE!) I pierced that first layer, it slid in so easily! (Ah, bliss! Love that feeling, I swear lips are so easy to do, maybe it was because I was to tired to feel anything but Ive never had a lip piercing hurt.) I wanted the hole on the inside to be behind the old scar so it would sit better then the last one so using that as a guide I positioned the needle just right.
It took me a while to do this, not because of being scared of the needle or even being in pain (Anyone who knows me will tell you, Im a sucker for pain and needles=<3) Ive just always tried to go slow and steady when piercing myself, flipping my lip out and checking that the needle was straight (The clamps that were in my piercing kit mysteriously never turned up.) I began to gently press on my lip, using my thumb to hold the needle and my lip steady I pushed my lip down on the needle instead of forcing the needle through. (I don't know why I use this method, I just do what works for me.) Success!
Hole accomplished, little blood in my mouth (Yum) but nothing major, I then realized that because I had pierced from the outside in that the pointed end was in the way of where I needed to line up the jewelry. I closed my mouth (I breathed through the needle) and there I was, sitting cross legged on my bathroom counter, head resting on hands, needle sticking out through lip, trying to think of the best way to get the labret stud in.
I considered using one of the old needle as a sort of placeholder and using it to force the other needle out while pushing the other in in the correct position with the non pointed end inside but I had the same problem as I would have with the stud, even though the needle is smaller at the sharp end it still wouldn't fit inside the point, so, biting the bullet so to speak, I pulled the needle out and followed it with the jewelry once it was out, not recommended, but neither is piercing yourself.
No trouble at all, I was ecstatic. Hands shaking (oh how I missed the high I get from piercings) it took me about 15 minutes to screw the bead onto the head of the stud. I kept dropping the tiny thing and my hands shaking like a stroke victim didn't speed up the process, I would either not line it up right and end up poking my nose or chin or not be able to turn it correctly so the threads lined up. I dropped it no less then 4 times. I almost gave up and put a different bead on, but all my others were somewhat larger and I didn't want the bead to overwhelm my admittedly small mouth, I finally got the tiny black ball secured and after brushing, rinsing (again) and a sea salt spray I was good to go.
Joe still hasn't noticed, it's been 3 days. My mom told me how nice it looked and said I had done a good job and told me to be very careful before handing me a bottle of saline wound care wash in case I ran out or my H2Ocean. I love my mom. She's awesome.
