I credit my parents with imbuing in me a love of history. Wherever we lived, we would visit nearby historical sites like forts and homes. We had many picnics at the Saratoga Battlefield, watched cannons being fired at Fort Ticonderoga, saw bulletholes in the bannister at the Schuyler mansion. I grew up going to Revolutionary sites.
I had a flashback to those times today when I visited the Minuteman park in Concord with some friends, after visiting Sleepy Hollow cemetery.
It's cool seeing places I've read about all my life, especially places that were important to our history. My very first time in Boston, I got all excited over seeing the Old North Church ("One if by land, two if by sea.").
I never realized that the Minuteman statue has a plow. I've only ever seen pictures taken from the other side. This is the same statue that's on the Massachusetts quarter.
We saw several modern-day soldiers at the park, and then we saw this fellow in costume.
Quotes from Emerson are all over the place; his homestead is right next to the park.
I need to do more reading on the Transcendentalists. They were an interesting lot, living in an interesting time.
I also need to do more exploring around Concord, but on a day that's not so hot & humid!
