Finn thought the park was really boring when nobody else was there. He was sitting in the sandbox by himself, with all these cool buckets to make sandcastles, but he had no one to talk to or play with. It was Saturday and his best friend Noah couldn't come out to play because of the Sabbath. Finn didn't know what that meant, but he did know even if Noah was kind of mean, the park was a lot more fun with him there.
His mommy was sitting on a bench not very far away, but she had a big pile of papers in her lap and was too busy to push him on the swings like he'd asked. That sucks because Finn really like the swings, but he wasn't big enough yet to go as high as he could go when Mommy pushed him. He sighed, picking up a stick from outside the sandbox, and started to draw pictures in the sand.
Santana had been over at Brittany's house for two whole hours, but Brittany was so sad, she didn't want to do anything. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce were fighting again, and Brittany and Santana could hear everything. They were saying really mean stuff with bad words, and Brittany looked like she wanted to cry, even when Santana said they could play Barbies (even though she really hated playing Barbies).
"Brittany, let's go to the park," she finally suggested. Brittany only lived across the street from the park, so it wasn't that far, and she didn't think Mr. and Mrs. Pierce would stop yelling for a long time, so they wouldn't even know they were gone.
Brittany looked like she wasn't sure she wanted to do that, but when Santana slid off Brittany's little pink bed and held out her hand, the little blonde got up with her and put her hand in Santana's. She hoped she wouldn't be able to hear her mommy and daddy yelling from the park. It made her really sad to think that maybe they didn't like each other anymore.
Santana held Brittany's hand all the way across the street to the park, making sure to look both ways for cars like her papa had taught her. It would be nighttime soon, so there weren't a lot of other kids in the park, but Brittany looked a lot happier now, and that made Santana happy.
"I'll race you to the swings, Tana!" Brittany exclaimed, letting go of Santana's hand and running before Santana could even say go.
Finn looked up from his drawings when he heard a loud voice and running feet across the park. He saw yellow hair and black hair, then he heard the swings start squeaking as the little girls got on. Finn had just started first grade a few weeks ago, and he knew the two girls from his class and from kindergarten the year before. Their names were Santana and Brittany. Finn thought Santana was the prettiest girl he'd ever seen. He pretended he thought girls were gross, though, because Noah thought girls were gross and Finn didn't want to be weird.
Brittany couldn't swing very high and she started making a sad, puppy dog face. So Santana got off her swing and gave Brittany as big a push as she could, which made her best friend giggle really loud. "Higher, higher!" she yelled, pumping her legs like Santana had shown her. Brittany was really loud, but her giggling was funny and made Santana start to giggle, too.
Brittany and Santana looked like they were having a lot of fun on the swings. Maybe Finn didn't need his mommy to push him on the swings. Maybe he could go on the swings by himself like Santana and Brittany, even if it wasn't super high. He was sort of shy, though, so he just stayed in his sandbox, digging little holes with his fingers while he watched the girls on the swings.
Brittany was going really high and Santana's arms were starting to hurt, so she moved away and looked around for something to do. When she saw the sandbox, she noticed the little boy inside. She knew that little boy. His name was Finn and he was from her first grade class, and he’d been in kindergarten with her and Brittany last year, too. He was friends with Noah Puckerman, who was a really mean boy, but Finn seemed really nice. He was looking right at them, but when he saw Santana looking, he put his head down and Santana smiled.
Finn felt his face get all hot when Santana looked at him. He didn't think she'd see him at all, because she was with Brittany and she was always only looking at Brittany. Now she was looking at him, and he wanted to hide his face in the sand. Like those really huge birds with the long necks did on the Animal Planet show he sometimes watched with his daddy. He hoped she didn't come over here and tell him he looked like a big tomato.
Santana, bold little firecracker that she was, walked right over to Finn at the sandbox and sat down next to him. "Hi, Finn," she said.
Finn heard Santana sit down next to him and say hello, but he couldn't make himself look up. "Hi, Santana," he said quietly.
"Do you wanna play tag with me and Brittany?" Santana asked. She felt kind of bad for Finn, sitting all alone in the sandbox. She recognized his mother sitting on a bench, but she looked really busy, and she thought Finn might like someone else to play with.
Finn smiled really big when Santana asked him to play with her and Brittany. "Yeah!" he exclaimed, looking up at her.
Santana smiled really big, too. Finn's smile was so big and bright and it made her feel special that she'd made him smile like that. "Let's go!" she exclaimed. She stood up and waved at Finn to follow her back to the swings.
Finn jumped up and ran after her, and before long, all three kids were hollering and chasing each other all over the park.
----
Monday morning, when Santana got to kindergarten with Brittany, she saw Finn and Noah playing with action figures on the circle rug at the back of the classroom. She and Brittany had had a lot of fun with Finn on Saturday, and Santana had been thinking about him all weekend. She'd even asked mama how to spell his name and had spent all day writing it over and over until it was perfect. Then, she'd asked for a piece of pink construction paper and had carefully written her name and Finn's name on it in green and red crayon. She'd written her name too big and run out of room, but after she put a whole bunch of red heart stickers all over the paper, she still thought it looked beautiful. Brittany went over to one of the big tables to play with Quinn, and Santana carefully took her masterpiece out before she put her backpack in her cubby and confidently walked over to the circle rug.
"Hi, Finn," she said, hoping to get the boy's attention.
Noah and Finn both looked up at Santana at the same time. Finn smiled and waved shyly, and Noah made a face. "Eww, what are you doing over here?" he asked. "Don't talk to her Finn. Girls are gross!"
Santana frowned at Noah. He was such a meanie! She was not gross. Her papa said she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. She ignored Noah and looked over at Finn. "I made you something."
Finn looked very surprised. "You...made me something? What?"
Santana carefully held out her construction paper to him. "
This," she answered.
Finn took the piece of paper from Santana and looked at the words on the front, his little eyebrows drawing together. They’d learned to read a lot last year and they were learning more this year. He knew how his name was spelled and that the little cross could mean the word 'and'. He guessed that the really long word under his name was Santana's name, because it started like an S just like Santana's name. The heart stickers stuck all over the paper made him blush, but he gave Santana a shy smile. "Thanks, Santana."
Noah looked up at the paper Santana had given Finn and made another face. "Eww, there's hearts all over that paper. The gross girl wants to marry you, Finn! Throw it out before you get her cooties!"
Finn frowned at his best friend. Santana had given him a present, and he didn't want to throw it away. Yeah, it had lots of hearts on it, and maybe it did mean Santana wanted to marry him, but he liked it. "I don't want to!" he said. "That's mean."
Noah frowned and snatched the paper out of Finn's hands. "Do you like the gross girl's cooties, Finn?"
Santana frowned and tried to take her picture back. She really didn't like Noah. He was always so mean! The paper was for Finn, not him! "Give it back, Noah!"
Before either Finn or Santana could stop him, Noah had ripped the paper in half and thrown it on the floor. He gave them a big smile. "There! No more cooties!" he announced.
Santana felt like crying. She'd worked so hard to make that special for Finn and now it was torn apart, thanks to mean Noah Puckerman! She frowned at him, balled up her little fist and hit him right in the stomach. "I hate you, Noah!" she screamed, before turning around and stomping off.
Finn watched Noah start to howl from pain, holding his stomach where Santana had hit him. He felt bad but thought maybe he kind of should have been hit. Quinn was already running over here with the teacher, so Finn bent down, picking up the two halves of the drawing Santana had tried to give him and went to find the girl.
Santana was sitting under her cubby in the closets at the side of the room, her knees pulled up to her chest when Finn found her. She looked so sad, and it made Finn feel really bad. He sat down across from her and reached out to tap her knee. "I'm really sorry Noah was so mean," he said quietly.
"I'm not gross!" Santana told him, looking at him with tears in her big brown eyes.
Finn's eyes widened and he shook his head really fast. "I don't think you're gross!" he exclaimed. "I think..." He looked down at his hands. "I think you're really pretty," he mumbled.
Santana's eyes got bigger. Finn was talking really quietly, but she could still hear him okay, and he'd just called her pretty! She wiped her eyes and smiled widely. "You... You think I'm pretty?" she asked.
Finn nodded, feeling his face get hot again. "You...have really nice hair. And I like... I like your smile," he admitted.
"I like your hair, too," Santana said, reaching out to touch Finn's messy hair. "And you're really nice to me, not like all the other boys." She pouted a little, not understanding why boys were so mean to girls all the time.
Finn grinned and touched his hair, too. He liked it all messy and sort of spiky. He thought it looked cool. He held out the two halves of the drawing she'd given him. "Do you think we can tape it together?" he asked.
Santana looked at her torn masterpiece sadly, but when Finn said maybe they could tape it, she smiled and nodded. "Yeah!" she said.
Finn grinned and stood up, moving back so Santana could crawl to her feet, too. "Um, can I...hold your hand?" he asked shyly.
Santana looked at him and nodded. "Yeah," she said softly, sliding her little hand into his.
They both smiled.
