I think you guys can help me with this

I need icons for movementmvt . All the ones I have are based on Star Trek, and I want something more *serious* so I don't feel quite so silly.
Anything about Latin America is good.
It would be really neat to have an icon with that picture saying "Am I not a Man and a Brother?"

For real life I'm looking for a non-fiction work - book or essay, doesn't matter - ( Read more... )

tok, icons, real life, school stuff

YAY ANTHRO NONFICTION

Okay this might count, it's more like history-anthropology-economy with Marxism, but E.P. Thompson wrote a piece called "Time, Work-Discipline, and Industrial Capitalism." He is awesome. PDF here

If that doesn't work, these are the whole books we read for the anthro quarter of my Social Sciences core class. Warning, they are really quite hard, and I think the ones that are easiest to get something from on your own are the Durkheim, Trouillot, Foucault, and MAYBE Sahlins.

Elementary Forms of Religious Life - Emile Durkheim (he's like the granddaddy of sociology)
The Savage Mind - Claude Levi-Strauss (structuralism)
Historical Metaphors and Mythical Realities - Marshall Sahlins (post-structuralism, I think)
Discipline and Punish - Michel Foucault (new historicism? post-structuralism)
Silencing the Past - Michel-Rolph Trouillot (that book on Haiti!)

If you're looking for an anthropological study, here are some that I've read about Latin America - the first is a 1500s text essentially but they are first-encounter studies of people.
Yucatan before and after the conquest - Fray Diego de Landa
Five Families - Oscar Lewis (this is a study of the poor in 1950s Mexico)
