1st of all since u seem to be somewhat onto movies, fav flicks are:
Breathless (dir. Jean Luc Godard, i cant say nething that hasnt already been said)
Casablanca (a beuatiful movie, both in scope and in its nuances)
Tokyo Story ( may seem mundane but Japanese directors are always difficult for us westerners, Ozu is a master... this film contains what I'm sure youll agree is one of films most disturbing lines ever...
"Life's disappointing isnt it..." wait for the rest of that scene, its crushing...
Once Upon a Time In the West (the violence is disturbing sometimes, but the cinematography is amazing, truly in the Italian style.. we both know from experience it is the best... so based upon Opera and Italian art...)
and of course
The Godfather...it is a masterpiece, speaking on the true American immigrant condition )
and since you expressed literary interests...
"The Stranger" Albert Camus
"Crime and Punishment" Fydor Dostoyevsky
"Noble House" James Clavell
"Sidhartha" Herman Hesse
"Atlas Shrugged" Ayn Rand
plus...
"The Death of A Salesman" Arthur Miller... truly an american tragedy... I cried at the end of this one... and im definitely one who swears by staunch masculinity....
neways these are suggestions not from an admirer or associate but merely someone who was once a friend who can identify with your newfound sense of high-appreciation of low-art...hehe arent we victims of our pop culture... isnt it sad to be a "gifted" (REACH for it) individual in a world of idiots...?
much luv and i hope this helps in ur search for enlightenment...
