Five weeks and counting

Still no home internet. Or phone.

The point-to-point service in our area looked up our address, and laughed. Point-to-point is a terrific idea for rural areas, but their signal is easily blocked by... leaves. It's the country; trees are kind of a thing.

Have investigated various other options, many of which claim to serve our zip code but it turns out only serve that portion of it north of the expressway. Yes, that same expressway with the damaged cable running over it. We are south, which is the wrong side as far as most infrastructure is concerned.

Which pretty much leaves us with waiting for the outage to be repaired, or going with the cable company we've been wanting to drop for years because they're pricey and can't deliver picture and sound reliably. Have not called them yet, because ew. But it'll likely come to that.

On the phone side, I snapped and bought a new cell phone, and new provider to go with. AT&T might not be the most cost-effective plan, but their in-store service people have been fantastic, and that's worth a lot to me. Getting used to a smartphone definitely has a learning curve, and most of the "advantages" are things I don't care about. But it receives and makes calls (mostly), which puts it one up on our land line right now. (I still have to stand in the driveway to make calls reliably, though at least I seem to be able to text from inside the house. Ah, progress.)
