Tripping over my own best intentions

So I've got MC, 2C, and 3C all in the same location, and I've figured out what the Thing is that goes wrong to provide impetus for the final action scene. I was all set to send MC & 2C off to deal with it, and stuff 3C into a box for the duration, when I stalled out again. And I got to wondering, why not take 3C along? Stuffing him out of the way would be easier for the writer, but since when is that a good reason for a narrative choice? So I looked at what it would take to bring him along instead, and the answer was, not much. Started revising accordingly -- and stalled again.

Bringing 3C along has the merit of annoying the other characters, and it might make a couple things harder, but then what? I can get him there, but I don't have anything for him to do.

So I am doing what I almost never do, and leaving the decision unmade and skipping ahead to the Thing that is wrong and the dealing therewith. Right now it's just MC and 2C dealing with it; if I come up with something that 3C would be useful for, I'll back-fill and put him in. If not, he can go back in his box.
