about the "i don't eat meat often" thing... i have no idea. i must of persuaded a couple girls in my sculpture class to try going vegetarian after having long drawn out conversations about why i'm vegan. they told me they had gone veg, and i heard them talking about going to subway to get a tuna sub. i piped in and was like... you know fish = not vegetarian, right? and they had no idea.
i just think people are uneducated about what actually goes on in factory farms. i think it all has to do with education. and when educating others it is very hard to not come off as a snarky bitch because it's something that means so much.
just the other day i was at my bf's MMA class and someone had brought their pug in. the guy was talking to the pug's mom and was asking her if she was going to dock her tail. she said "oh, no that is there to stay" or something, and i piped in and said "why would you dock it's tail? you know that their tail's are an extension of their spine, right?" and the guy just looked at me and said "what? really? why do people dock their dog's tails then?" and i said, "because they're ignorant and think the breed should fit THEIR personal standards of what a dog should look like"
i just don't understand why people don't make the connection. i've been around all kinds of animals and i can see their personality in all of them. they all feel pain, sadness, confusion, protect their young, etc... all things anyone else would do. that right there is reason enough not to eat them. let alone the hundreds of other reasons to go veg.
some people will never understand, though, unfortunately, no matter how much you try to teach them.
and I agree with you. It's truly bizarre that so many people fail to make the connection between us, our pets, and the rest of the animal kingdom.
I volunteer at our city's shelter with my boyfriend. A couple of weeks ago the shelter had a huge fund raiser at a local restaurant. We got into a conversation (about us being vegetarian) with one of the other volunteers Dave. He started rolling his eyes, and stated that we wouldn't have canine teeth if we were meant to solely eat vegetables. Lame and a highly retarded argument. What about Pandas motherfucker! Boo Yaa!
AND THEN he asked us how do we know that plants don't feel pain. As you can imagine that conversation has throughly ruined my opinion of his level of intelligence. Oh, and btw all of these comments from a man how rehabilitates feral cats! I wonder if he's aware that in many other countries feral cats are a perfectly except able entree.
I agree with how you feel about docking. Did you know that for Australian shepherds (and many more breeds im sure) they have to get their tails docked as soon as possible after birth for some lame/odd ass reason. Which means they receive absolutely no anesthesia! Talk about fucking barbaric.
Also, My boyfriends sister is a "vegetarian" who eats meat on special occasions. Such as Christmas, her birthday, and when she goes to ikea, because you know you have to have the meat balls if you go to ikea!
lol... wow that guy isn't the brightest crayon in the box! it's very strange for him to eat meat b/c of having to have such a close relationship w/ feral cats to rehabilitate them. i've dealt with many ferals and some can be very wary of sudden movements after living with them for months.
i had a lady that helped run a dachshund rescue invite me to go to a "weiner roast" ... weiner dogs! ha ha ha... not.
