awesome day

yesterday, i discovered [again] that the dso was performing rimsky-korsakov's scheherazade. the last show was today. talk about luck.

if you don't already know, scheherazade is an indescribably beautiful and dramatic piece.[we played an arranged excerpt of it in 8th grade] rimsky-korsakov is the same guy who wrote the famous flight of the bumblebee.

the first time i'd heard scheherazade was probably elementary school, when i'd heard an except on encarta [i used to play with the media and stuff]. one time, i downloaded it. 45 minutes long. took me like a week [i have 56k :( ]. then my brother erased my hard drive and all my mp3s along with it.

anyway, i knew that i had to pay a visit to the meyerson. i've been waiting forever for this day.

so today, i met up with marissa, justin, brooke, and brooke's family after mass. i got out of mass late today, so i gave everyone really, really short notice. the concert was at 2.30 and we were leaving garland at 2.05. and the box office is closed on sundays, so we didn't get to reserve seats.

we got there probably at exactly 2.30 or maybe a little after. the line for today's tickets were long. if you don't get there on time, you have to wait between pieces to be seated. and choral terrace seats, which ironically, are the best and cheapest, sell out the quickest.

when we got up there, we asked the guy for 5 choral terrace seats. they were out. so he looks down at what he has left. only about 15 tickets. no 5 seats together, only pairs. he lays 3 pairs out, and says "this is all i can do for you." we look down...

$46 each for the first pair, $46 each for the second pair, and $40 each for the third pair.

i told them choral terrace seats were only $15 each. oops.

we hesitantly start pulling out some money when the guy goes, "just take them and go." what??

he was giving us over $250 worth of tickets for FREE. why? "because we want you to come back"

SUPPORT THE DSO. of course i'm coming back! carmina burana is in may!

[ side story ]

when michael and i went to hear appalachian spring in the summer, we were late and it was pouring outside. so i went ahead and ran in while he was parking so that i could get us tickets. choral terrace tickets were $10. i had $40 on me to pay for our tickets. the guy at the counter said that those were sold out; next cheapest were some floor tickets for $30. i had no idea what i was going to do. then he said, "i'll give you two for one."

i love the dso.

back to today. so we waited out in the hall while the first piece was going before we could be seated. i didn't like it anyway, it was really weird and "modern." then the ushers led us in.

the tickets justin and i had were 4 rows from the front.

the first piece was a saint-saens violin concerto in b minor. the soloist was brilliant. i'm going to download it.

but i was waiting for the piece after intermission.

words can't describe how beautiful it was hearing this entire piece live, so i can't really say anything about it except i kept kicking justin because i was so excited.

afterward, we headed over to the cheesecake factory for a fabulous dinner.

all in all, a kick-ass day.
