We've been here a month, and I haven't even posted to let you know we arrived safely*!
Vancouver doesn't seem to have made up its mind about whether it's summer or not, so the weather is alternately warm and overcast. At the moment it is storming. We are staying in a nice high rise apartment until the end of August so we have a good view of the lightning.
On a nice day, this is the view from our apartment:
From
CanadaWe're within walking distance to Stanley Park, which is great. It's about the same size as Kings Park, but more developed (it has an aquarium and a miniature train, for instance) and with wildly different flora and fauna.
Neither of us have jobs yet, but we haven't given up hope!
We are heading to Ontario for a week on Thursday so that
theducks can catch up with old friends. Should be good!
Some little things I've noticed:
- Vegie burgers here are usually mock-meat style, as opposed to the potato-and-pea style you get at home. It's a little disconcerting. That said, though, most of the large burger chains have them so if you have to, it's easy to find fast food.
- Not only that, the sidewalk hot dog vendors all carry vegie dogs.
- They don't print the tax on the prices here, which leads to the interesting effect of my being unable to purchase goods except with notes since I can't calculate the correct change with only a few seconds notice.
- I'm still not quite over the fact that you can see mountains from downtown.
- Drivers don't seem to understand roundabouts, or at least not the one at the end of our street. Several times a day I see drivers going completely the wrong direction around it (even accounting for the left/right thing).
- XKCD updates at completely the wrong times.
- It is so weird sharing a land border with another country.
