elections

So it's Student Government election time at UF, at least for senators, which means of course it's all lies, corruption, voting errors and then of course being bombarded by party representives everywhere you go on campus. After 2.5 years at UF, I've managed to learn how to dodge them, through a variety of tactics ( Read more... )

THANK YOU! I'm so glad someone noticed the blatant finger pointing at Dustin (I knew it was him right away in the first article that ran yesterday). As soon as I read that, I called my boyfriend up and bitched to him about it, because more than the Greek, oh I mean Gator, Party it makes TKE look bad because the Gator canidate also happened to be a TKE pledge. Grrrr....

As for the whole "forcing to vote" thing, I think she misunderstood. I don't think it's forced, they don't walk you to the voting booth to make sure you vote. They just enforce it and ask for your stickers. Or maybe sororities are different. I don't think she would have mentioned what sorority she was from if she understood the system yet. Part of being Greek is being involved in campus. They put each other into positions. That's how the system works outside of college too. Not that I'm endorsing the way things go, but if people are that upset about Greeks running the system they need to get at and vote! Sorry, tangent, I know. (and I'm sure you are spasming at that sentence) I just hate how a lot of people complain about the system but do nothing to change it. That's why presidential elections our freshmen year were so great, record turnout and third parties that forced votes into second rounds.

And if nothing else, the girl could have simply abstained from voting and still got her sticker (it's what I did! because I didn't agree with either parties antics after reading the newspaper today, but they still wanted my sticker)

I meant endorse, not enforce, in the second paragraph.

Yeah, Dustin told me yesterday that it was him they mentioned vaguely, so I was on the lookout.

And yeah, I agree for the most part... except I still don't agree with how they get people to vote, force pledges to do DM, etc.

And yeah, that was my main point of this entry... how come no one other than the Alligator writers actually vote against the Greeks if they don't like them that much?
