Watching shows like Made on MTV make me appreciate being raised in a small town and going to a relatively small high school.

The current episode features a band nerd girl that wants to be made into a basketball player. They interviewed the popular kids and one of their quotes was: "Band people are pretty much the lowest of the low, I think." It showed the popular kids teasing this poor girl that they knew absolutely nothing about. They had no clue who she was, but they were making fun of her anyway.

Things like that make me realize how nice it was to go to a high school where you knew relatively everyone there. Most of the popular kids had been in Gifted with me since elementary school, before we were all thrown together in middle school (there's one middle school and one high school in Arcadia... or in Desoto County, for that matter). We'd all grown up together, so the different groups of popularity didn't mean much to us by the time we were Seniors.

I could have been friends with the popular kids from my class if I wanted, regardless of the fact that I didn't play sports. Even as a band nerd, they would have accepted me because we'd all known each other since we were kids. Of course, I liked my band family a whole lot more than most of the other kids from my class, so I didn't. It's not like there wasn't some sort of stigma placed on band people, but it wasn't nearly as bad as other schools, I'm sure.

It's weird to realize that in some places, arrogant dumbass "popular" teenagers are damaging other teenagers for life. It's not like memories of teasing ever go away... I can pretty much remember every awful thing that has ever been said to me. So imagine being teased every day? This is probably where my deep hatred for organizations like stereotypical social fraternities and sororities comes from. It's just the popular kids from high school moving up into another form of popularity.

But at least in college, those on the outside don't have to care.
