Wow, today was an AWESOME day for Reporting.
1) I got a 73 on my outside story (the Hurricane Charley profile on Katie/Travis). Initial grade was an 88, but I miss two commas and put "towards" instead of "toward" so that's 15 points off. Yarr. Still, he gave me an 88 for the writing! *happy dance*
2) I got a 90 on my in-class assignment from last week. And a smiley face/"good job" too =). I nearly died.
3) I got an 87 on today's AP style quiz. When he handed it back, I started hugging the paper and Foley laughed. Last week I had an A until the last few questions, and dropped down all the way to a 70. When he handed back my quiz, he made a comment like: "I was grading yours and thinking: 'go girl, go!' until question 16 and then you took a nose dive." LOL. So I was quite happy, no nose dives this week.
4) For today's in class assignment, we had to write two stories. The first story was straight up news, but people were having problems finding the news in all the mess of quotes and facts. I found it right off the bat, and took off. Foley came up behind me and said: "Well, at least someone's on the right track."
5) I wrote the best lede I've ever written, I think, for the second story. He told us to be creative with it, I read the facts, and BOOM, lede just came to me. I was especially proud of it, so when Foley made his rounds checking ledes, he came to me and said: "All right, let's see what ya got." I let him read, and then he nudged me on the shoulder and said: "Good. I like it. Very imaginative." I nearly squealed from excitement.
See Jane read.
See Jane read newspapers and magazines instead of books.
See Jane's test scores rise to 24 points above the national average on standardized tests.
Say what?
Normally unmotivated students may benefit more from reading newspaper and magazine articles than from reading textbook stories, according to Dr. Anne Adams, a professor at Duke University.
etc.
Very few people will understand the true joy of getting C's or B's in Reporting. You cannot even imagine how much pressure this class puts on journalism majors... it's either survive this or change your major, basically. So to be chugging along with a C average that could very likely be turned into a B, I'm ecstatic. And to be getting praise from Foley to boot? Man... it's a good day.
