My cat won't eat anything but kibble. I've offered her everything from steak to salmon to tuna to chicken. She looks at me like I just put a huge pile of dog poop in front of her. Picky little brat, she is. All cats are really. You might have to play around a little bit to find a combination that she likes.
Monet-kitty will try and steal your cereal milk if you don't pay attention though.
yes. I know from people in rawdogs that it's MUCH more difficult to change a cat's diet than a dog's, so I'm very grateful that she's at least willing to try the raw minced meat.
if she digs her heels in, I can live with feeding her canned, although that isn't very good for her teeth and I don't feel comfortable using something labelled "meat" when I don't know what the meat is or how fresh it was. I looked at the ingredients list on the kibble that came with her and the FIRST ingredient listed was "cereal". the stuff has a total meat content of like 10%. at least the canned is all meat.
I hope she'll go for the whole mouse diet. that's really the best one can do for a cat, health wise - but like you say, one's hands are tied. it's not like you can force feed them.
Heh. Most domestic cats wouldn't know what to do with a mouse anymore. LOL
I recommend buying one of each until you know if she likes it. That way if she gives you the "WTF are you thinking?" look, you don't have a bunch of extras going to waste.
It's really quite amusing testing to see what the cat will eat. My dad once offered Purkin some gravy from the egg foo young we were eating, and his response was to paw at the ground like he thought it was his litter box. Plenty of laughs from that one
( ... )
Speaking as a VERY experienced cat person, odd as it may sound she's MUCH more likely to eat her meat at least lightly cooked than she is to eat it raw, especially if she's adjusted to a diet of prepped cat food. Our kids will sit around & stare while we cook but will NOT touch the raw meat. We can leave hamburger, fish, staek, anything out & they won't touch it but as soon as it's cooked they're all over it. Getting them to eat dead critters is going to be touch, she's a lot more likely to take it & hide it or use it as a hockey puck, leaving you with little rotting bodies hiden away. My understanding is that a dirt like that won't provide all the nutrition she needs either. Some better quality canned food will have extra goodies (like egg bits & vitamins) to help her live longer. Can you get Science Diet cat food in the UK? They're very good.
Hm. Maybe the Science you have there is different than the one here? We got overweight cat mix (canned, not dry) for 'seph & it's go a good ingredients list.
the canned version's probably better (I was thinking of the dry) but probably still vastly overpriced for what it is.
if I have to go with canned I'll look for one that uses human-grade meat that's clearly identified - i.e., "chicken" or "turkey" rather than "meat and meat by-products" on the label.
Oh, I was only speaking of canned, not dry. With the canned we buy here for the boys, we get ones that're plainly labelled "Turkey" "Tuna and egg" "Ocean White Fish" etc etc We don't do the "Mixed Grill" or "Ground Supper Surprise" (yes, that's a real product)
"Turkey, chicken, wheat gluten, egg whites, water, (list of added vitamins and supplements), sodium benzoate (preservative), couple of other bits & pieces. Health stores 'round here sell organic pet food with only whole meats, eggs, etc. They expire sooner so you have to buy just a few cans at a time, and they cost more, but they're perfectly healthy.

it'd be great if I can get her to eat small whole prey though. it's exactly what her body evolved to need and it'll keep her teeth nice as well.

NOT gonna feed Science Diet. Have you looked at the cereal content in that?
...we'll see what happens with the furry corpses. I can't get any before next Thursday anyway.
If she hides them - I have a GUNDOG. They won't stay hidden long!

(Ground Supper Surprise? That would violate my rule about feeding the animals anything I wouldn't eat myself...)

'course half the time they don't eat it 'cause they're spoiled by all the stuff we feed them from the kitchen.
