“Hey, Bellatisimo!” Adam stood grinning in the doorway at his friend as she rushed around the room, looking for all the world like he had just won a free meal. “You wanna come on a ride with me? Johnny’s said that if I drop by before noon tomorrow he’ll give my baby a free tank of petrol ‘cause of that little job I did for him last week, so I wanna use up the last few liters I’ve got left. ‘Sides, I promised I’d take you ‘round to Maple Park for a day, right? Figured I’d kill two birds with one stone and all that jazz…”
Bella looked up at him as she finished tying her hair back and she snatched her purse off the bed. “Sorry babe. As much fun as it sounds, I’m meeting up with Sasha at the mall in about twenty minutes. I promised I’d help him get ready for tonight; he’s planning on asking that lovely boy of his, what’s his name, Troy, to marry him or something and he wants everything just so.” She sighed and smoothed the wrinkles out of her skirt then reached up to kiss him on the cheek. “So I really don’t have the time today.”
Adam pouted and touched her waist. “Mou-I was really looking forward to spending the day with you. But, I understand. Sasha needs you and your endless supply of talent and skill.” He sighed dramatically, but smiled as she kissed him on the other cheek.
“Sorry, Luz, but I’ve gotta go. Try and have fun without me, alright?” And with a grin and a wink she was gone, leaving Adam standing sulkily in the hallway. There was no point in going to Maple with Bella. It was a rather boring place without any company. Although, he grudgingly admitted, that a single scoop of the ice cream they sold there was worth an hour or two of loneliness.
“I shall never understand the nicknames you two give each other,” Adam turned at the sighed statement, to find Terrence looking at him from his bedroom doorway. “And I really mean never.”
“‘Lo, Ter.” Adam gave him a lopsided smile.
“Nor shall I ever understand why you insist on giving me nicknames also.” Though his tone was still serious, he gave Adam a tentative smile. “Did I hear you offer to take Bella to Maple for the day?”
“Yeah,” Adam nodded mournfully. “Did you also hear her say she didn’t have the time?”
“I did. But if your offer’s still standing, I could go with you, if you like.” Terrence’s smile faded nervously at the edges. “I’m no match on Bella, but...”
“‘Course the offer’s still standing!” Adam grinned, wrestling Terrence into a headlock and proceeding to give him a noogie. “What’s got you asking so careful-like? Four years of high school, two years of college, and then God knows how long as roomies, and you’re still cautious around me?”
“Ouch. Five years and counting of rooming. Wince. Adam, would you get off me, please?”
“I suppose so,” Adam conceeded, leaving Terrence to straighten himself out after the rough treatment while he grabbed the spare helmet from his room. “Just promise me you won’t freak out this time.”
“I did not ‘freak out’,” Terrence huffed, pulling the helmet over his head and grabbing his jacket.
“Sure you didn’t, Terry, sure you didn’t. You didn’t scream or anything, and I was just imagining that you were hanging onto me so tightly it damn near bruised on the corners. Oh, and you didn’t slump over sideways and start muttering about ‘never going on that thing again’ when we finally stopped.” Adam laughed, shrugging his own jacket on and pushing open the screen door with his keys jangling in his hand.
Terrence, to his credit, didn’t take the bait. Instead, he waited quietly until Adam had himself settled on the front of the bike, before swinging himself on behind and wrapping his arms around his friend’s waist tightly. Adam snickered. “Holding on that tightly doesn’t help your case, mate.”
Terrence waited until the engine started to reply. “It’s not that... Okay, perhaps a little. But more it’s that I’ve just missed you. You spend all your time with Bella now, and I’m beginning to feel like I’m just the man who pays your share of the rent and feeds your cat.”
As they sped away down the street (and Terrence used all of his self control not to scream or tighten his grip excessively although he did mutter ‘nervous eye-twitch’ on sharp corners and roundabouts) Adam smiled to himself, and made a mental note to spend more time with his best friend.
Also, to thank Johnny for convincing him to install communication radios in his helmets. Best three hundred dollars he’d ever wasted.
