She can’t will away the sizzle of destiny that zaps her when they first meet, or the fire that burns so deep in the eyes of the girl as she kneels. She can’t explain away the deep part of her consciousness that accepts she cannot change this fate, for that most certainly is what it is, nor the way the girl suddenly holds even more allure.
It’s nothing special, she tells herself. She’s just another priestess, just another pawn, another girl to use and have as I please. She is not the child of the prophecy.
I won’t let her be.
This sudden streak of jealousy and possession will be her downfall, she knows. You cannot change a prophecy. You cannot steal from fate. You cannot change the way the heart works. She drums her fingers on the arm of her throne as she waits, and she scowls.
Only a pawn, she tells herself, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
Only a pawn, only a mortal heart.
This sudden streak of jealousy and possession will be her downfall, she knows, but Sorcha never denies herself what she wants. The thought of whether or not she really wants to throw everything away for this mortal child never crosses her mind. There is no internal struggle or debate.
She may be only a pawn, but she is my pawn, and her heart belongs only to me!
And, maybe, a pawn can become a rook with time.
