“Oh, my baby!” Bella wails, hugging Parker tightly. Parker, who is now a good foot taller than his mother, makes a face over her head, but Chris is too busy trying to smother his laughter to help. “Will you be alright? Who’s going to look after you when I’m gone? Maybe I shouldn’t go at all? Yes! I’ll just stay with you for another few years-that’s be alright wouldn’t it?”
“Mum,” Parker chokes out, “You may no longer have a corporeal body, but you are still suffocating me.”
“Sorry,” she grins, letting go of him with speed. “I guess I’m just a little emotional.”
“Just a little emotional?” Parker echoes disbelievingly.
“Tell me about it,” Chris exclaims, having finally stopped laughing long enough to collapse into the couch, sprawling out so he takes up the entire thing. “She’s giving me headaches. Probably because I’m just so used to you,” he adds as an afterthought and gives his friend a grin.
Bella and Parker both roll their eyes. “Tell him he’s an idiot,” Bella says, and Parker does so. Chris snorts and sticks his tongue out in her general direction.
Bella’s smile falls and she casts her eyes down. “Are you sure you’ll be alright, Parky?”
Parker lets the nickname slide. “I’ll be fine mum. I’m seventeen; I can take care of myself. And if I need any help with anything, I’ve still got dad and Adam.”
“And me,” Chris adds, but they ignore him.
“And I mean, I’ll be moving out soon enough-once dad decides to let go.”
“He’ll come around,” Bella smiles. “It’s Adam you’ve really got to worry about.”
“Oh, I know,” Parker rolls his eyes, and puts on a deeper voice full of mock worry. “‘My poor little guy, living all on his lonesome in some big old empty apartment in the city? Not while I’m around! You’re staying right here for as long as I have any power over you!’” Bella laughs, but Parker raises an eyebrow at her. “You sure you want to be laughing, mum? He sounds just like you, after all.”
She sighs and run a hand through her hair. “I suppose you’re right.”
“It’s not like you’ll really be alone,” Chris mumbles, mostly to himself, watching Stanley as he begins to doze in Jane’s water bowl. “You’ll have me.”
Bella laughs again, and ruffles his hair to a squawk of indignation. “Parky, hold his hand for a moment, would you?”
“Mum...”
“Come on, you won’t deny your dear old mother her last request will you?”
“Fine, fine.” Parker sits on the couch beside Chris (or, more accurately, on Chris, who failed to move his legs fast enough) and snatches up his friend’s hand, linking their fingers together. Bella shimmers into visibility before the blond’s eyes as Parker’s eyes drift shut in concentration.
“Hey, Bellatisimo.” Chris grins.
Bella grins back. “Hey, Chrissy.” To Parker, she says, “Now he can join in without us having to repeat everything for him.”
“Great,” Parker grunts. “Because it’s not like this is really difficult or anything.”
“Shut it,” Bella says lightly. “It won’t be for long anyway, I really should get going.”
“We’ll miss you, Bell.” Chris pouts, and Bella gives him a tight hug, tears welling in her eyes.
“I’ll miss you both too, Chrissy. And Stanley as well.” The frog looks up lazily at his name, and splashes around a little in acknowledgment.
Parker sighs as Bella descends on him. “Don’t cry mum. Wherever you end up, it’s not like we’ll never see you again.” She hiccups a little. “And besides, if you really want, you can apply for visiting rights. You know, gifted son and all, should reduce the paperwork a fair bit, don’t you think?”
She hiccups again, but this time around a laugh. “Yeah, I know. It’s just, you’re my baby, and I don’t wanna go!” She brushes her lips across both of their cheeks, and stands in the middle of the room.
Parker cracks an eye open and smiles at her.
“Bye mum.”
“Bye Bella.”
“Bye baby, bye Chrissy.”
She gives a little wave, and vanishes.
The two of them sit on the couch with their hands linked for a long while after she’s gone. Chris pretending like he can’t hear Parker’s sniffles, until the brunet rolls over and hides his face in Chris’ shoulder; then he hugs him.
Like Parker had said-it won’t be forever.
