And yep, "Divide and Conquer" pretty much killed the S/J ship for me. It's taken me a loooong while to get over that episode - but thank goodness for the multiverse and "Ripple Effect".
Oddly though, the fic I most connect with (and the fic I tend to write myself) deal with the aftermath of Martouf's death, with a healthy dose of the Tok'ra aren't all sweetness and delight thrown in as well. I think it's because I like to think that his death had a real and lasting impact, and that she did love him a little, and not just because of Jolinar.
I really have to finish my by_hand ficathon entry... as it's all about the Martouf hawtness... hehee
Oh good, someone who agrees! it's not even that I was all that into Sam/Martouf; it was like "you expect me to get on board this 'ship, when she's going to connect Martouf's death to confessing her feelings? yeah, no guilt there AT ALL." Plus, it was tacky and just... mean. overall, I just try to forget that D&C happened at all.
And definitely there's a lot of fic possibilities in how she deals with his death, and I've read many over the years. Plus a whole slew of various ways to bring him back and how that might change things. Although I have to say, from the perspective of a Tok'ra fan, there's a whole lot more fic that treats the Tok'ra as slightly-less-evil-Goa'uld (and sometimes you'd have to squint to see any difference at all) rather than the good intentioned and complex, if arrogant, race I believe them to be.
GO, finish! The world can always use more Martouf-hawt fic. :)
I know! I always think he must have been in more episodes. Part of that is Summit, I guess, keeping him in our minds, but definitely a character with way more presence than his few appearances suggest. I'm so glad he came back for RE.
I love Sam/Martouf!!! Thanks so much for this. I was upset, too, with the way the Sam/Martouf relationship that had been building was shoved to the background and S/J completely overshadowed Martouf's death. Argh! Those bastards!
I didn't explain it well, but I didn't really "ship" either S/M or S/J before Divide and Conquer (I'm not an OTP person, in general). But yeah, I hated that one ship came at the expense of another. And that Sam was supposed to just shrug off KILLING Martouf and not connecting the two events and be filled with guilt about it. Anyhoo, many aspects of the episode fill me with rage, and I usually try to forget it ever happened.
Oh, I didn't take them as your OTP (that would be pretty hard the last several seasons other than Ripple Effect!). But they were wonderful together, and cheated at the last moment. D&C has so many small great moments, I hate that the tinkly piano music and slo-mos of luuurve ruin it. *gag*
and very timeful - I have hit writer's block in a crossover story where Sam and Martouf have a bit role as visiting characters. I must stick this in memories so I can refer to it.
This is so late lol... But I started watching Stargate, SG1 and Atlantis back in May, then stopped for awhile back in August as I started Uni.. but I started shipping Sam/Martouf/Lantash straight away.. I try to read some decent stuff but it's really hard as I started with probably arguably one of the best written Sam/Martouf/Lantash stories of all time - it was a fix-it where Jolinar survived in Sam.. It's hard to find stuff after that as I get put off when they don't treat Lantash like he's there.. or it just isn't written well enough.. Do you have any good fic recs? I am the kind who has OTPs straight away.. in Torchwood I started shipping Janto straight away, and in Glee as soon as Blaine was introduced Klaine became my Glee OTP :P

I love them so and was so sad how not-long he lasted. (and, really, for so few episodes - he made quite an impact!)
They could have been so fascinating together.
