Idk, I liked it. But then again, I kinda liked the books the first time I read them about 5 years ago. I always said that the books read like they'd make better movies. That said, I don't necessarily think the movie was better but I think it was pretty good. I'm genuinely upset that the sequel isn't getting made because there's this scene where Simon bites Jace (if you didn't really get the hint, he was turning into a vampire) and it was so erotic. But I don't think that would have translated well into the big screen anyway. Also, there's this one scene in the 3rd book where Jace tells Alec to kiss him (he's trying to make a point that Alec isn't in love with him like he thinks -- it was bullshit) and Alec doesn't do it but I'm convinced that it would have happened in the movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I read the books because as a stand alone movie, it just didn't explain enough about anything. I quite liked Jace in the movie, actually. And I liked Jace/Clary early on and then I got bored of them. I'm not sure whether I liked Jace/Clary or Simon/Clary more but I think I'm leaning towards Simon/Clary because best friends are my thing. I thought the dude who played Jace was attractive, although not really my type.
(Honestly, I have no proper opinions about this movie except that Aidan Turner is a really good actor.)
Looking back, the books were lulzy. I honestly only think I liked it because I got caught in the fanvidding hype behind them. Also Valentine was weird. Like...I still don't get his motivations? I guess power and shit but idk, he's a pretty poorly developed villain. He wasn't a good villain (in the movies at least) because he wasn't memorable. He wasn't sympathetic and he wasn't so evil that it's genius. He was just...there. Like a lot of characters.
See, Maia sounds INTERESTING. And of course she would get thrown to the background. From what you're saying, it seems like CC can only manage to develop one or two characters at a time and the rest fall behind. I remember reading CC's famous LOTR fic and she's pretty decent at wordplay, and it's a shame she's so sloppy with characters. Are the books worth looking into? Everyone I talk to either hate them or love them.
Valentine was no great villain in the books, either. He was definitely clever but that's about it.
CC shows that she is somewhat capable of developing characters but she shows too much blatant favoritism in her writing. Interesting characters like Maia don't stand a chance. I would rec them with the annotation that it will frustrate you. Deus ex machina resolutions aside.
