slowest internet in the world
and my gmail isn't working so here's a pointless livejournal update for you.
i am out of accra (hurrah!!!!!) and in Cape Coast. It's pretty amazing here in most ways and I am extremely happy to be able to see the ocean from this house, not just smog and grossness. also, it's quiet- no TV's and fights from next door, just birds and insects. speaking of insects, i had the biggest spider i've ever seen in my room last night (woody had two of them so who am i to complain...). i've seen these types of spiders before, they are FAST and they JUMP, but have always been willing to let them hang out. i was not willing to have this one next to my bed. it was about 3 inches across, visably hairy legs, and visible fangs. i killed it with a chemical spray from a safe distance. it curled into a ball and is still laying where it fell. i took a picture of it but there's nothing to give an indication of just how large it is (sadly i am exaggerating how afraid of it i was...it would have been really big the first week i was here, now it's just average, especially since seeing that cockroach in the bathroom). went to a funeral and a former slave castle yesterday, should have been depressing but actually a really good time. kwasi is here, unfortunately, holding my hand as ever. yesterday he proposed marriage because 'i don't eat' so he could buy food and i would be a cheap wife. sweet. about the food- people here give me SUCH a hard time! they never bother woody but they constantly watch me eat, check exactly how much i consume and, no matter how much it is, tell me i'm strange, that 'i don't like food', that i need to eat more. i have gained weight since being here and eat sometimes to the point where i feel ill, and no one cares. like, i am actually causing offense. if there is any food left in the bowl, it's not good enough...and it's not woody that they want to eat the rest, despite woody's extremely small appetite and paranoid eating habits no one notices. i always say when i especially enjoy the food (quite often!) and eat everything...in fact, there is no food i don't enjoy in some degree. except for that fish thing with the spinach. but i ate it! you all know my ability to eat. it counts for nothing here.
why isn't gmail working??!! what a waste of an hour of my life this has been, internet is too slow for me to do annnnnything. don't even want to post this as i will then officially have nothing to do.
