As you know, the announcement went out on lj_biz that 6A/LJ has started using Omniture collecting more detailed information on how people use LJ.

start ETA LJ has always collected information on visitors, but from what I gather, the use of Omniture means that they'll be collecting more detailed information from people who ping various journals hosted ( Read more... )

Actually, they aren't starting to do anything. They just switched companies, that's all. They've been doing this for years, just like almost every other major website I can think of. Hell, my own personal website tracks stuff like this, although I hardly ever look at it.

They've been doing some tracking, yeah, but they've switched services and will be collecting more information on people who use/visit LiveJournal. From what I gather, it's slightly more detailed than what you'd get from, say, LJToys which is basically a visitor hit count (sort of)

But you're right. The post above is a bit misleading in the wording and I'll edit.

Right, LJ toys doesn't collect that kind of data -- but things like awstats do, and that's complimentary on just about any webhosting package I can think of. That tracks everything they listed in that post, including what browser you use, etc, so. I just don't get what the big deal is, although it's nice they are adding an opt-out. Frankly, this is better communication than we've had in a long time.

My website doesn't offer an opt-out. Neither does CNN, Salon, and Fark, three sites I know for a fact do this same kind of tracking.

I'm pretty sure my site has awstats, but honestly, the only reason I use such things is to catch hotlinkers and 'debug' my site. But then again, for the kind of site I have (basically an out-of-control personal site) and the number of visitors to it, I hope I haven't given anyone the impression I'm possibly going to do something sinister with that kind of information. It's actually helpful in that it lead me to find a way to do an .htaccess/PHP combo that lets people who have Norton IS and certain other security programs actually see the site but prevent hotlinking at the same time ( ... )

Thanks for the info on how to opt out. It annoys the hell out of me when people collect info like that on what I'm reading and viewing!

I opted out, too. Not that my journal is the rocking place yours is, or anything. But it's the principle of the thing.....

Thanks for the info. And oh-- the DS9 reviews! Should be a book.

(Has Wil Wheaton written any more of his ST-TNG commentaries since late last year?)

*sigh* I forgot to opt my communities out. Damn.

(I also don't trust them not to sell their stats. Y'know?)
