I am not prolific - no sir-E bob.
However, if I could write a cute little blurb about the sense of smell and the wonderment of the olfactory system, I would! Too bad this entry will be anything but cute - more like sporadic and disorganized - take what you will though!
Don't get me wrong, I am amazed at the capacity provided by each of our senses. But this entry is about SMELL.
Actually, as humans - we have tons and tons of smell receptors, and a large number of them don't work. Funny how dogs can smell more than we can and hear at higer frequencies and all that jazz.
Anyhow, I think smells are a bit like songs: they can elicit emotional connections to certain persons, things, times in your life, foods, etc.
The smell of a dirty gym bag takes me back to my jr high tennis days --> i then think about the fun times i had and the sort of things going on in my life at that point.
I have certain perfumes that I used at certain times of jr. high and high school. When I was in Barcelona, Maddie, Julie, and I went into this huge perfume store as we were walking through the mall. I smelt some Hugo Boss and it took me directly back to spring of 9th grade - crazy eh.
The smell of coffee in the morning is delightful. Lavender vanilla fabric softener is a winner!
Tyson chicken plant smells YUCKY.
My mom has a certain smell - no one will ever smell like her. My dad too. Brendon's neck has a smell. My sister's house. So so many things.
When I am in the shower I smell clean, and I love that.
Smell induces a ridiculous amount of memories and associations. Crazy, huh.
I am currently taking neuroscience and we get to learn about all the crazy connections going on up there in that complicated anatomical structure we know as the brain. I am delighted to let you know that a particular structure called the uncus is responsible for relating certain smells with memories. Cool, huh! You should use that word this week - just say UNCUS. It is fun to say.
neuroscience real cool. you should take it.
p.s. the pineal gland makes melatonin and that makes you sleepy!
