He doesn't remember anything about himself besides his age (18) so he takes up the name of Hachijo, but remembers clearly what happened on the island. Together, they write under the alias Hachijo Tohya (Tohya is 18, Hachijo another reading for Yashiro), and since he can't tell Ange the truth he doesn't want to meet her.

Beatrice's lifeless body floated to the bottom of the ocean. In the moment where her heart stopped; all her life flashed before her eyes. This was the only end for her, the only way to atone for her sins.
But in the corner of dying mind, she heard a voice. It was Battler. "I will take your sin as my own.". These words stuck into her like an icepick.
Her sins were not atoned for. If Battler were to carry her sins; how could she atone for them here?
Then a Miracle happened. Beatrice, who had been dead for the last few seconds, awoke. Her heart stopped beating. Far from drowning, it was the shock that had "killed" her.
Beatrice put all her might into her legs and barely managed to make it out of the water, on a piece of driftwood. Battler's boat was already speeding out into the distance.
Beato held onto the driftwood, until finally another boat approached. Apparently a sea captain had gone out for a nostalgic trip and seen a trail of smoke.
When Beatrice got to Niijima, there was no sign of Battler. Eventually he found Battler had been taken by in by a young woman, who handed him over to her nurse friend that worked at the local hospital.
Battler did not recognise her.
She broke down in tears; now Battler would go on carrying her sin, forever scarred by her death, and not even remember her.
Beatrice spoke with the nurse and the woman.
"Please, help him remember. Help him remember that all that happened, and that I am not dead. Or else it will destroy him without him knowing what it is. When he does, I will return. When he remembers; call me and I will reappear."
If only Beatrice had been a real witch, she could help Battler and truly atone for her sins.
The "nurse" smiled at her.
