assignment 5: greeting card

so this assignment is to design a greeting card for either christmas or the new year, and i chose the new year. the aim of this assignment is to convey the theme 85% throughout use of colours and 15% through choice of words, design etc.

my chosen final piece (: this piece makes use of the complementary colours of orange and blue, as well as analogous colours of orange. it conveys the festive feeling, without using any of the colours that are used for more familiar themes. for example, i decided not to use the aqua and red version because the red heavily reminded me of chinese new year, and the combination carried a slight connection to christmas as well. i wanted to use colours that were not associated without other occassions but at the same time were bright and happy to carry a positive atmosphere and cheer people up if they should ever receive the card in the mail :D

anyways, i decided to go for a champagne motif because we all know that ppl love to toast each other with champagne when the new year arrives. even us muslims toast with grape fake champagne :D and i thought using the splashes of champagne from the bottle would make for a lovely pattern. what i did was draw the pattern out by hand with a black marker, scan the pattern into the computer and cut out each section of the pattern as a layer on its own, and played with the positioning and angle. i wanted a design that would make it easy for me to play around with colours, and yet still be artistic and pretty and get the point across.

in the picture below, i played around with analogous colours, complementary colours and triad colours. these are 18 possible versions that i have, from which i narrowed down to the above 3 favourites.

did u like it? :D
